My son is 8 months and he has his first tooth. I have been wanting to bump him up to the #3 baby foods because the #2's just don't seem to fill him up anymore, but as soon as he gets a little chunk of noodle or rice he starts to gag and inevitably throws up. This happens every time. What should I do? I mean, he can't eat pureed food forever, you know?? Anyone else have this problem that can offer some advice?? Thanks!!
These are awful. I never gave them to my kids. They have to separate the chunks from the puree, and most babies just can't do this, so they try to swallow the entire thing and gag. Most babies his age do really well self feeding. I used to make cubes of apple, pear, potato, carrot and cook them until soft and then let the baby feed him or herself. You don't have to BUY baby foods. Babies have been eating for thousands of years, and "Baby foods" have only been around since the 1930s. Cube some food and see what he does with it. He will probably pop it into his mouth and gum, and like it. I rarely bought store bought foods for my kids, in fact my second baby REFUSED baby foods altogether. She skipped "puree" and went right to cubes at about 8 months. If he can't handle the cubes yet, he simply doesn't have the maturity for chewing, and he will some time. Just stick with what he likes. Just because Gerber says you "have" to use a certain product at a certain age doesn't mean they know what they are doing. In fact, if they did ANY research at all, they would KNOW that "chunky" food mixed with puree is almost impossible for MOST babies to eat. Listen to your baby, not a big corporation. They would have him on their food for 4 or 6 years if you let them. Make it yourself, save some money, give him the textures HE likes, and get creative.
