There's more than one way to save the planet.

Just like old computers, we are slowly making ourselves obsolete. And when things become obsolete, there's no retirement home or some sort of paradise for them. Instead they are just discarded.

Now imagine some sort of artificial intelligence robot. It won't need to eat, sleep, drink or breath. Therefore, it's not going to worry about growing crops, clean drinking water or air and it certainly won't have a human sense of morality. Instead it's concern is going to be mining and recycling of materials for the creation of newer machines and these machines will feel no loyalty towards their human creators.

We must break away from this sort of research and move towards mechanics, artisan and craftsman endeavors. These things have low impact on our ecology and produce great economic stability and improvements in standards of living.

As my understanding of human nature becomes less incomplete (I've resigned myself to it never becoming fully complete) I'm seeing such things as the true purpose of research as being the extension of someones ego as opposed to being for the greater good. Further, I get the sense that the only advances that are pursued are ones that will make someone a ton of money regardless of the benefit it might have for mankind or the planet.

This is the filter through which I regard the global warming/climate change issue... there seems to be an emphasis on using money to buy a license to pollute as opposed to seeking corporate/political means of using the issue to further repress economically the masses.

They should be very careful with this artificial brain technology- perfect advancement of such a thing may bring rise to an entity that will lay bare their bullshit for all to see and comprehend...

I can dream... can an artificial brain dream?

I agree. Scientists are arrogant men with egos that outweigh basic common sense. They majority are deluded men that will make deal with anyone or any organization in order to further their work and research.

Therefore we have a group of delusional men being used by the corrupt. And the end result is we will die.

    Agreed.
And for the corrupt, money and power are their only goals. They only serve themselves and will do nothing to help the other creatures of this planet. Unfortunately, we are a stupid species and instead of uniting against these men, we will continue to hang ourselves on a rope of our own making with new Ipod, Cellphone, etc that we purchase.

From this post, I feel True Artificial Intelligence with the ability to learn is around 10-20 years away. That's pretty fast considering that it will be able to learn. Technology like that in that wrong hands would be catastrophic though.

i've been thinking about the same thing myself. unfortunately, a lot of the breakthroughs in science have been/are developed into means to limit an individual's intrinsic freedom that it's just no longer a good news to hear about another breakthrough. you have to think about how it will be exploited, because it will be.

this starts to sound an awful lot like those catholics were right when they locked Galileo up (well, not really), that science is evil. and i'm the last person to agree with that. i love science. but science has been given into the hands of multitudes and megacorporations with means who are either afraid of their fellow human beings or for whom it is beneficial to infringe upon people's personal lives that are none of their business. thus twisting the science into something i want no part of. it's sad.

neural activity doesn't equate memory...but memory equates intelligence. Or rather, the ability to retrieve stored memories. Does this brain show signs of intelligence? hmm, I would need more information about it. 'they' say we have neural activity going on 7 minutes after death...Is this a conscious brain?

i always thought death was only death when neural activity had ceased?...

...it depends on what you consider death.... is there like a consensus about it?

After the heart has stopped beating I suppose, after one has stopped breathing for a certain amount of time, or has left the conscious realm...gosh, who knows. It would make sense that death would be the end of neural activity. I sure like to think of random signals firing around after all else has ended...would make for some interesting dreams? hehe
