“Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed.” - Friedrich Nietzsche
I got my truth from people who fought in wars. Not those who just sound bite about them. It was not an inspiring 'pro-war' message.
i'm not a big "thank the veterans" person. a vast majority of them took the job because they weren't able to get another job with comparable benefits, not out of some great altruism or anything. i don't see how it promotes more war though. are people so desperate to get thanked that they'll go attacking other countries just for a thank you?
I believe the wise person would either leave the individual veteran alone or at least show quiet respect for the person. Regardless of how they ended up in the military they likely were placed in situations they could never have been prepared for. Quite likely they were lied to and deceived about what they would be doing. Many of them have seen and been required to do things that they will never be able to forget or accept. If you want to bitch about war and the military take to the feet of the greedy old men who are always at the root of wars. The fresh faced kids whose circumstance places them in that situation often have little choice as they see it. Just my 2 cents worth
Just a random thought after seeing a bunch of political leaders talk about it. Mainly the governor of pennsylvania thanking the vets. I meant no negative remarks towards veterans.
i have successfully celebrated 26 christmases and have yet to convert to catholicism. praise the lord.
You’re right military service is often nothing more than a steppingstone to college through the Montgomery GI Bill. Hotwater
I've always been confused by the celebration of mass murder. Now I'm confused by how prowar people on a hippy site can be.
Perhaps your confusion is based on the premise that a prerequisite to being a member is to adopt one point of view with regard to military or political exploits. I think these debates that spring up are compelling demonstrations of how easily divided we are. I'm not a supporter of what I see as a corporate fascist state with a military/police department but that is just my opinion. I expect that many will hold very different views and I have no problem with that.
Really it's just confusion with how hypnotized such a vast majority of the poulation can be, especially whe you consider that many prosoldier people say their antiwar, and almost all of them profess an antimurder stance. Talk about doublethink (hats off to Orwell). What kind of crazy, self-deceptive Jedi mind tricks does that take? Then there's the thing where people say murder is bad, but war isn't. You may as well say flowers suck but bouquets are awesome - as long as their put together to give some greedy bastard more power and keep people under control.
There's been a bit of a debate in the UK about "Poppy Fascism", which seems to be on the increase in recent years, culminating in arguements about whether the England soccer team can or can't wear a poppy on their shirts and the supposed disrespect when international rules said they cant. So they're wearing poppy armbands instead... This from one of our regional morning newspapers sums it up pretty well... "So now England footballers will be able to wear poppies on their armbands. Good, I suppose. But... The poppy is a fantastic symbol and most of us choose to wear one as a personal mark of respect and as a way of giving some money to help. But now footballers are going to have to wear a poppy, presumably whether they want to or not. The BBC and other broadcasting organizations clearly have a huge box of poppies in every studio and no one's allowed on air without one. Politicians daren't be seen without one. It is no longer a free and personal choice, but almost compulsory and is in danger of becoming another form of political correctness, compelling us all to conform. Is this why wars were fought ?" Of course, we could retire the poppies right now and people could still donate to veterans anonymously. But I guess the truth is that most people want to conform. Being part of the gang saves you from having to think too much for yourself...which is why we still have wars. Vicious circle. .
Theres a huge difference between respecting what another person has been through and being pro war. I was a dumb 20 year old kid when I got my draft notice. I didn't want to go to prison and never really considered going to Canada. There was nowhere near the level of awareness then that there is now. Few of us who lived in rural America had been exposed to much alternative thought. I did learn a lot about who I was during those 2 years. Learned how vile and vicious war is. Learned that greed drove the war. Came to terms with losing close friends forever. Decided to live a life in opposition to war and greed. Got educated on the GI bill. And really have no need or desire to be thanked for any of it. It just happened that way. I was lucky, I never had to kill another kid. Wish it were as simple as some people think...just choose the side of righteousness and condemn those who don't. It all still makes me sad and angery because nothing has changed
I have a friend who lost all her brothers when the Germans came through her house..they got lined up outside and shot on the spot...weird thing is..she hates the Russians more...she won't say why but I can just imagine what happened to all the girls and women once the men were gone I thank the dead soldiers who fought and died so that less of us have friends with memories like hers. my remembrance is for ww1 and ww2 soldiers...i see those as necessary wars...everything after that was more of a choice for those who decided to serve...people used to fight for what was right...now they seem to serve for the paychecks and college tuition
