For me work life preoccupies most my time, and a family life generally causes funds to be low. Not to mention I rent my house. But I ask myself what seems a likely question thanks to the signs of the times. How important is a bomb shelter? Legally to build you would need a permit and it must follow building code along with a inspector I'm sure monitoring the project. By completion will the government deem you a terriorist? Unlikely right, idk just curious. But nuclear war and natural disasters, to me raise the question how important is a bomb shelter?

    Honestly...

If something like nuclear war were to happen here, unless you're making a bomb shelter outta something like titanium (or something indestructible), nothing will keep you alive.

As for natural disaster, its a good idea...not sure where you live, but we don't have many home-ruining storms around here...we've had a few but nothing that people can't rebuild from.

What good is one? Other home and stores wont be one. Plus a bomb shelter wont protect against radiation from a nuke. You'd just be in your own grave.

If your home town gets nuked, you are not going to want to survive anyway. So it's kind of pointless.

Now a storm shelter is a practical thing in many parts of the world.

where i live, i find it extremely absolutely unnecessary... i guess, that people around here never even thought about the idea of a shelter for disasters or bombs

I'm more into the idea of an armed and armored SUV or RV in the event of Chaos, but then I've always liked being mobile. Run on wood gas of course.

And yes, many will scream "But gassifiers are far less effecient than ICEs or Bio-diesel", I'd like to know where the hell they think they will fill up the tank when civilization implodes and there are no more vats filled with used fryer oil behind McDonalds. Gassifiers, just toss in yard waste or wood chips and go. Works as long as you're not in the Southwest states. :D

I don't know how important it is ... but I do know that in the event we have a nuclear war and find they work, we're probably going to find we have saved all the wrong people.

In the post-apocalypse world, we'll have far too many politicians and useless egomanical indistrialists, and far too few guys who know how to push a plough, raise a timber-framed building, forage for eggs or preserve summer produce for winter consumption.

If you build a shelter, would it be just for you and your wife and kids? What about the others in your family(s)? If you couldn't make one big enough and stock it with enough supplies, would you hide it from their knowledge? Just lock the door and forget about them?

And what if the neighbors found out that you had one..

There is an old house where I used to live that has one in the back yard. Not in any way hidden either. Through the chain link fence (from the street) you can see the hatch and vent poking up through the grass.

The house was built in the 60s it looks like. So you know their whole family knows about it. And who knows how many countless thousands of other people (like me) know about it. I wonder how much room they have in there?

When the shit hits the fan, there's going to be a whole lot of knocking on that hatch!

Reminds me of this old Twilight Zone show (from 1959): 'The Shelter'

What? Is this a thread resurrected from the 60's? Did nobody tell you that the cold war is over? Nuclear weapons will never get deployed. There will never be another world war, in the way that we have had or may envisage. And even if there is, you have no way of knwing the integrity of your shelter - nor would you want to survive the aftermath.
The biggest threat to the west today is coming from places we never considered previously, such as the economy being left in charge of the bankers, welfare and education being removed from funding so debts to bankers and China can be paid, and the rampant spread of Islam. I am really not considering any nuclear threat. Neither should you.

Wish I could share your rosy-cheeked optimism, Cass.

    But ...

Nuclear disasters don't take wars ... they can come about as a result of natural events such as earthquakes and tsunamis causing reactors to go into meltdown (ask the Japanese abotu that one)

There are plenty of unstable regimes around the world with access to nuclear technology, and the risk that they may start tossing the things aboiut is probably higher now than it ever was.

N Korea vs South Korea, anyone?
    China vs Taiwan?
    Pakistan vs India?
Iran vs just about anyone in the world?

Then there's your maverick terrorist groups who could lay hands on one ... or three ... and set them off somewhere in the heart of Western society just because they can.

What happened to the Soviet arsenal following the breakup of teh SOviet Union? Do you believe that someone, somewhere, has a neat inventory on which they're all neatly listed, allocated to Russia or the Ukraine or wherever, all ticked off and accounted for?

I don't. I don't believe anyone knows how many there are, or where they all are. And I don't believe we can be confident that they're all being safely stored, either.

There have been more than 2,000 nuclear weapons detonated in tests on US soil in the past 50 years. That tells me that somebody's planning on using them. And no there won't be another world war, because it'll be over before anybody realises what's going on...

Dude... did you seriously just call the "rampant" spread of Islam a major threat to the West? What is the matter with you? I think maybe you should start thinking about a bunker, mate...

    (Sorry for the double post)

There are countless other reasons people believe they might need a shelter, other than a nuke war.

People with money get sold on anything for a reason to have one.

Hell, some are even spending a mil or more on converted missile silos because they're worried about 2012.
