is the greatest unsung hero of modern music.
he does not fit in any genre, he's done them all.
i love REAL GONE his new CD and FRANKS WILD YEARS, which is older, but he has so many that i havent even heard of. he's been around forever, SOMEBODY has to know who he is.

Aye Tom Waits is pretty sweet like. I haven't heard the two albums you've mentioned, but have more of his well known stuff - "Swordfishtrombones" being my favourite, it's a marvellous record. Top 5 of the 80's easy. I suppose that album is a bit detached from most common genres, it's very bizarre but not psychedelic, very jazzy but not jazz...His storytelling is great, there's a song on swordfish called 'Frank's Wild Years' actually, definitely worth a download - But get the album, you'll not regret it me thinks.

"Nighthawkes At The Diner" is a good album when the mood for it strikes, recorded live in a studio Waits had converted into, well a diner I guess, for the evening. Seems to be one too many songs about the weather, but when people talk crap in diners the weather always comes up I suppose.

    Anyway, both worth a purchase.

Tom Waits is awesome! My husband and I listen to him a lot on weekend mornings while we drink our coffee, listen to NPR, do crafts, whatever... Filipino Box Spring Hog is a favorite of mine. Misery is the River of the World is a great one too.

He's in the Jim Jarmusch film Coffee and Cigarettes. Has anyone heard anything good or bad about the movie?

Down By Law is better than Coffee & Cigarettes. Duh.

And Real Gone is not a very good album compared to his earlier works.

I saw a two second clip of the Tom Waits/Iggy Pop conversation, you can be sure that part of the film wont suck. And as it happens I haven't heard a bad word about the rest of it. Didn't seem like something I'd rush out to see when I caugh that piece on it, but it didn't look bad at all :)

How is Waits' later albums overall? Has he lost it completely or is there still some charm in the old boy? :p

I can't wait to see Bill Murray with RZA and GZA.

And Real Gone is certainly good, just hard to get into. I suggest Small Change, Rain Dogs, or Heart of Saturday Night.

What's the duh for? I was asking for opinions and I haven't seen either one.

Why are you so hostile? I was saying that listening to Tom Waits (along with Tracy Chapman and some others) is a part of our weekend rituals, which also includes listening to talk radio. I didn't know this thread was meant to be political or analytical. I thought we were talking about good music.

Ahh! I love Tom Waits, he is the such the quintessential tortured artist, its great. His lightest album is his first and one of my favorites, i have Closing Time on LP and when its on i am always reminded of what an amazing song writer he is.

I liked Coffee and Cigarettes but I'm a big Jim Jarmusch fan, if you are expecting a normal movie with a normal plot etc. then you won't like it.

My favorite Tom Waits albums are Rain Dogs, Small Change, Heart of Saturday Night.

His newer stuff is good too.

10 cent, i see you are in Indiana now, no wonder you are so pissed off ;)

Actually I thought that Coffee and Cigerettes had TOO normal a plot, it reminded me of every flim student final cliche.... except with celebrities.

I like Tom Waits pre-swordfishtrombone stuff as well as his new stuff... the man is just a god is all :)
