i think the fact that the rich guy in a rich guy car who ran down a protestor didn't get pulled out of his car and beaten is a sign of how non-violent these people are. what a fucking asshole. you don't 'accidently' hit the gas. if there is someone standing no more than a couple inches in front of your car, you should have your foot firmly on the brake. inching your car forward is bad enough - just asking for something bad to happen.

I would guess this group has been infiltrated by the police. However spray painting and breaking a window is kids' stuff and not worthy of calling it "violence".

But it's a good thing the protesters policed the incident themselves without needing police.

On second thought, I don't think this group was directed to do this by agent-provocateurs. Why? Cause the police weren't there to start a riot. If the goal is to provoke a police backlash, the normal M.O. of provocateurs is to attack the police themselves, so they respond.

As far as this goes, it's an interesting piece of propaganda. I do believe there are many out there who feel the same way. And should this way of thinking ever prevail, get ready for a real revolution that won't be pretty.

As much as we all want this process to happen peacefully, we can already see the powers getting worried and testing out various means of social control, including violence.

Unfortunately the police these days have a whole slew of new weapons I bet they're just dying to try out on us. While we have the numbers, they have the armory. So it's not in our interests to resort to violence, as many could be hurt and it also hurts public opinion, which is very important to the success of this movement at this time.

Better to be non-violent and see where it takes us. The Occupy movement has a lot of good will right now. It's not worth it to risk it for any minor advantage that violence could possibly offer. The only advantage I can see is more publicity in the MSM, but it's not good publicity.

Now there may come a time when the governments (local and national) decide to come down with a heavy hand. And that time may be soon. They're already trying hard to shut these protests down, and arresting hundreds if not thousands of people.

If they feel they cannot control the masses, then they may resort to more violent tactics that hurt more people or even martial law!

I know that down on the streets things can happen fast. I would rather see peaceful protests continue, see how much they can accomplish, how many more people join the movement and support it.

What these violence loving "anarchists" are forgetting is the lessons of history. Gandhi proved that you don't need to be violent to change the system.

What takes far more balls, imo, is to stand up to the violence, peacefully. Peaceful resistance is at the core of the movement, not violence. So when the police are violent, as happened in Oakland (oh so many times!), the public sees this and sides with those who are peaceful. Change that equation and you LOSE the respect you had tried so hard to gain...

I figured out how the revolution won't happen. Eh Skip, John Lennon will multiply and determine the asexual cloned/cloning version for Evolution. You know it is interesting. Will the workings of tolerance and respect be human law OR the divine law of close perception?

I don't know Skip, that document reads kinda flaky to me...like poorly conceived, fake propaganda.

I certainly hope there aren't "many out there who feel that way".

Pacifism is the movements strength, and through those means may we reveal to the world the true face of our oppressors.

A lack of defense is strength. Unfortunately not as many are oppressed as are domesticated.

There are a lot of anarchists who think it really is as simple as killing your draconian overlords and living peacefully everafter, with nobody watching you.

I have no doubt that they're pissed that there's a peaceful movement taking hold, and they missed the boat. Now's a good time to try to get their two cents in, and get some media time.

Black blocs have their place, and that place is not now. That might be great in some situations, but where you have the numbers and the right, there is no reason to stoop. Violence against a peaceful movement won't do a thing if you all stand together. "Well... we'll shoot you!" doesn't mean much if everyone understands this and knows they're still in the right and it's worth it.

And we still have a salvageable government. If you establish a government in a violent act, it will take you dozens or hundereds of years to be recognized as having any legitimate entity. Also, did nobody consider how disasterous it could be if the wrong ten year old "anarchist" got pissy about his bedtime, and was there when they took over an ICBM silo? The last thing we need is even stupider people in control of one of the worlds two sizable nuclear arsonals. If we did have a violent revolution in the US, guess what? The rest of the world would be here, and heavily armed, not to protect the government but to protect themselves, and see that our nuclear weapons and reactors remained secure.

Anarchy is great when it means freedom to work things out on your own. But then they need to work out their own violent protests. Anarchy is idealism that deals with how we WISH the world/human nature worked, not how it really does.

If that report is correct, that someone beat on his hood, or even otherwise hassled him, I have all the sympathy in the world for him. If someone beat on the hood of my 700 dollar car, I would dump the clutch on their asses.

*edit* Lol@ the "black bloc". A few guys running around in a crowd of police and people dressed in bright colours, wearing black hoodies and masks and looking as sneaky as they can amid hundreds of others, is NOT a black bloc. Either two high school kids comprised the whole black bloc, or two rookie police officers comprised the whole black bloc. Black blocks are when it's come down to it and you've got to do something because of an event that will come and go (not like occupy, which is about EVERYTHING, and in for the long haul) and you get a bunch of people in black and stand together, and do what it takes, from standing there to burning everything.

I'm afraid I cannot disagree (sigh)

It's pretty tough to convince sheep they are oppressed when they've still a little grass to eat ...wait, here come the wolfs!

The Occupy movement should get a few dozen security volunteer protesters, trained in crowd control and physically able to overpower someone and use these people to find these types and neutralize them one way or another. This gives what was our finest day in the movement so far a bad tarnish. If we can effectively police further protest ourselves and try to work with the regular cops to prevent vandalism it would make the protest even more powerful.

Here's what the Black Bloc are missing...

    1. This is a PEACEFUL protest, not a violent one, even against property.
    2. Vandalizing property is a tactic used to draw attention to a cause. But, DUH, the Occupy movement already has the world's attention, we don't need more due to violence.
    3. The Occupy movement has embraced Gandhi's peaceful-resistance ideology, so there is no place for violence.
    4. The Occupy movement has come out of the Peaceful protests in the Mideast that SUCCEEDED in overthrowing at least two governments, only because they were peaceful and not violent.
    5. Non-violent protest brings support from the 99%. Violence brings condemnation from everyone!

So Black Bloc, either get on board with the Occupy movement's program, or stay away!

I do agree that we should drag out the peacful protests for as long as we logicaly can, to let them grow as much as possible. But there will come a time when we have to disassemble this failed system. And the people who currently run this planet arent going to change their inhumane ways just because hundreds of thousands of people around the world tell them to. Violence, in the long run, is inevitable.

I've seen the video and it's really revealing. The couple that got run over were close to the crosswalk. However they purposely stopped in front of the car, and the guy did pound on the hood (twice) in an effort to get the guy to stop the car. Instead he moved forward (slowly), while the two protesters stood their ground. Then he accelerated and ran over them. They could've easily moved aside, but didn't. So that's probably why the police let this guy go. He did have a green light at the time.

This is a very symbolic incident. You have those with wealth unwilling to stop what they are doing or respect those who are protesting. You have protesters unwilling to yield to the wealthy anymore. So what do you get? You get HURT! This is exactly what is playing out on the larger stage.

So the question becomes how many of us want to continue to get run over as the wealthy pursue their greedy lives, unconcerned about the misery they are causing the rest of us...

first of all my response to that is HOLY FUCK!!! HE sped the hell up. I wonder if that person survived....let me know if you know anything.

I, in NO way, support what that driver did, I repeat in NO way. The protester, however, started to instigate the driver by banging his fists on the car. This as you stated earlier is not non-violence. He may or may not have caused damage, but his outrage was demonstrated in a 'more violent way' than what I would like to see from Occupy activists around the world.

I am frustrated on so many levels with that video.

Both of the people hit by the car had non-life threatening injuries.

Peaceful protests should remain just that.... Civil disobedience doesn't work if people bang on other peoples' cars. Any violence or rioting makes peaceful protestors as bad as the powers they are protesting against. Stay peaceful and patient is what I say. Also, if there is violence that is void of motive, those trying to 'control' and/or "protect" protestors are at fault. Violence creates more violence. People are even more mad now than they were initially, and that is not a good thing.

Also, I agree, Black Bloc has no place in these protests with their tactics and track record of violence. So yeah, they need to show their solidarity by aligning with the tactics of THIS protest...which is peaceful :D
