i have been a Veggie all of my life. And I have attempted to be Vegan twice now. First time.. I got really bored of eating, and got ill purely because I was being lazy. Second time, I was doing very well... Until I decided to push myself even further and go on a raw foods diet. This was extremely limitting and For some reason I have found myself eating ice cream, indian take outs, and a LOT of cheesey stuff again. Now this is not good for me as a lactose intollerant haha.

So please... Without any disturbing stories, how do you keep your motivation to stay vegan? Youdv thought my guilt, and the fact that im ill after everything I eat would be enough wouldnt ya!!

motivation? i have been a vegan for more than 25 years and i never had to push myself to be a vegan..i just like the stuff i eat,is it so unusual?let us say i think to be a vegan is just fitting to my ideal of purity through food..i think the more you eat natural things , the more you like them,...let us say ideologically i agree with it, but it is true also i never liked meat and i like to be as close to nature as possible and get my food from trees..as i am saying maybe if you eat as a vegan many years it will change your taste ...at least if you eat natural things cause some vegans also eat junk food being a vegan..if you force yourself this is not good it may create frustrations.. really you cannot find anything you like? however there are a lot of things we can eat as vegans..cereals, fruits, nuts, peas..do you go to an health food store, you will find a lot of stuff there!potato, corn, beans, vegetable, organic bread, soya products..the choice is really huge..

In my early days it was important for me to keep strong convictions to stay on the vegan path.
My inspiration came from books on veganism and factory farming. Today there are a lot of options available to remind yourself why to chose veganism. The documentary "earthlings" seems to smack the message directly in your face. You can find the trailer on youtube, along with other informative videos.

Another important thing that helped me along my vegan path was the book 'The 80/10/10 diet.' by Dr Doug Graham. This outlines, IMO, the absolute best way to go about veganism. I've never eaten so many great delicious foods and felt this good in my life.

You and your coach could learn a lot from veganbodybuilding.com, and 30bananasaday.com.

There is no reason you can not be healthy and great at sports of all kinds and be vegan. Don't let anything stop you from living your life the way you want, there is always a way.

to rainforest: how can your coach have final say in your diet? is he or she also your parent/ caretaker?
Coaches can suggest but they are not the final call.

to firebird: we have many similar posts about motivation, and what you have here is a pretty good round up of what is said.
    Here is my usual response--
Why do you want to be vegan. That answer will lead you to your day in day out motivation.
Are you a vegan for health reasons? (but really a strict vegetarian as vegan is an animal rights philosophy?) then remember all the damage dairy does to your intolerant system and have substitutions and options at the ready.
Ask the Indian restaurant what is vegetarian AND dairy free. (eggs are served as meat, typically, but ask the first time) Ask for roti without ghee and prepared with oil.
see what they can make fresh avoiding dairy.
Have a frozen treat on hand, or choose and ice over a creamy dish.
I can't help much on cheese, except Daiya was passable if salty as a sample.

    Are you a philosophical vegan?
then you have to know why you are. Treatment? see all the gore-o-rama videos from the organizations.
Truly believe humans do not hold the right to use animals for food or entertainment? Then you have to walk that talk, and make that decision every morning, every meal, every time you select body care products, clothes, shoes, etc.

without the conviction, the action will feel hollow.

you shouldn't have to force change

because then it wouldn't be change

    instead it would be tolerance.

I am a lacto ovo vegetarian , not a vegan yet , but what movivates me is what i see every morning. When i walk outside i see buck, zebra, giraffe etc , when i drive to work i see cows and sheep and i think to myself how could anyone kill any of these beautiful animals just to eat it .That thought keeps me of the right path , love and respect for the creatures that we share this planet with is my motivatation.:2thumbsup:

My motivation is that I care for all sentient beings. I don't think about maintaining my motivation because I cannot imagine anything that would make me lose it. It's part of who I am and who I have always been. I couldn't "fall off the wagon" without becoming someone that I am not.

I repeat to myself: 'remember! it's not for you.' Veganism is the yummy way of life. ;D I'm in harmony with nature and with myself when my food is cruelty free.

I've never found any trouble with veganism... It just happened, I suppose, and I love it :)
Being vegan is enough of a motivator for me.

What I would suggest is to use "training wheels"- vegan yogurts, cheeses, ice creams, etc.
This stuff is pretty unhealthy (well, I think plain, unsweetened, non-GMO, domestically grown soy yogurt is healthy), but it keeps you away from the real stuff until you lose interest in animal products.

Start cooking, too! There are so many vegan websites and bloggers who post delicious, sexy food all the time. Check out vegweb.com and findingvegan.com if you haven't already :)

Because it's gross to put a corpse in your mouth. ;)

Also, daiya fake cheese helps when I get a craving. That's my only real weakness with veganism.

It's so unnatural for us to harvest the milk of another animal and feed it to our young. Its creepy, and you don't see any other animals doing that.

Watch Food Inc and research The ingredients of your food. I promise in a couple years you'll look at anything non-vegan with pure disgust.

We could spend all night listing things that other animals don't do. Humans are the most adaptive and resourceful species on Earth. Ever seen a gazelle brushing its teeth or playing guitar?

I so wanted to like dayia mock cheese. It was far too salty, but the texture was close.

On the topic of natural, there are no naturally occurring strict vegetarian animals.
Even the mainly herbivores get bugs. Animals are wired to survive and spawn.
Human animals are also wired to question and improve.
That is why we think about ethics and nutritional aspects of a diet at all.

I've always seen the comparisons to the rest of the animal kingdom as slippery slope arguments.
We are not lions, or snakes. Certainly not hawks or porpoises.
We can choose to emulate that which we see as "noble" or "primal" but we do have the ability to be more than the rest of the animal kingdom.
And that includes finding options to using and abusing other species for vanity or convenience.
