Just for curiosity, cause I've listened to some songs, and it was really good. I didn't think it was emo though..... Do you think its emo? Do you like his music?
I find some of his songs on the melancholy side and definitely emotionally-powered...but not 'emo', at least not by today's definition.
I would say Elliott Smith is "heroin blues" or "mellow, sleepy blues" I like some of his music. Some of it is boring.
Probably my favorite artist ever. And no I wouldn't say hes "emo." His music is emotional but not "emo."
It would never have occurred to me to tag Elliot's stuff as emo.I don't think your archetypal "emo" fan is into Elliot Smith. There aren't many solo artists in emo.I like a song of his called "The Rose Parade."
Nah, not at all. Don't listen to what close-minded kids say at school. They think depression makes you emo. Emo is a style and a genre (which I personally really can't stand to be honest, although I don't like to judge people either). Elliot Smith doesn't fall into that category. You could call his music indie. Dark, depressing, melancholic music isn't limited to emo or different types of metal. It's like people can't find anything good to express themselves, but there's actually a lot of good creative and artistic music that fits those emotions. I also recommend checking out Nick Drake.
I prefer mellow, sleepy blues to heroin blues. Not all of his songs are about heroin. In fact, most of his songs are not about heroin. They're about the human experience and the emotions involved in it. Happiness, sadness, hatred, love, addiction, etc. Drug imagery may be a part of his music, but they're just good vehicles for dependance. But no, he is not "emo". I don't really even know what "emo" means. It's just a label put on people and has absolutely nothing to do with music IMO.
I don't really know actually... by MY definition is just like, music that are really sad, saying that you suck and things like that hahaha but take it however!
Multiple subgenres based off of multiple subgenres of punk Early emo was sort've an offshoot of gothpunk; later emo is more related to pop punk and later-hardcore.
I suppose 'emo' varies, depending on where a person is from. My understanding of it is that it began as a music genre that merges post-punk with light hardcore and extremely whiny, nasally vocals. In addition to this, the lyrics usually revolve around muddled metaphors pertaining to bleeding hearts, fallen angels, etc. mixed with the general angst of youth. The lyrics in my opinion are not gritty in a realistic sense but white-washed with melodrama. Then, this developed into an androgynous fashion statement that comes from glam and punk with heavier eyeliner. But if one were to say someone is 'emo' ..which stems from 'emotional', he/she could be referring to their fashion sense or their melancholic and apathetic state. (Punk made the latter cool, now it just seems too commercialized and over-done) So, I would say Smith's music is 'emotional' but not 'emo'...I find 'emo' too tied up into stereotypes of suburban youth using depression as a statement. What that statement means, I'm not sure...The first sign of me getting older maybe...
