I think being a 'hippy' in this modern time means the following:

Any person who consciously decides that the excesses and selfish, destructive practices found so often in our society, are something best to be avoided is a hippy. I don't think that it has anything to do with a certain haircut, clothing style, or anything like that anymore.

It really boils down to a person deciding to try not to get sucked into the materialistic world full of shallow, surface relationships, where "Keeping Up With the Jones'" takes on a whole new meaning. The modern hippy tries to cultivate his or her life by sticking to his or her principles, whatever they are, as long as they have in mind the well-being of the human species. They try to form close, meaningful relationships, although there may be far fewer like-minded folks to find. They aren't afraid to express themselves constructively.

    That is my take.

I agree with that but I'm not a hippy at all. That's just how most intelligent people think....

Nowadays it seems like everyone is too busy to just let go and be free. People stay cooped up inside on their laptops, getting on facebook and sending their instant messages. What happened to the letter? What happened to going outside and enjoying everything the world has to offer? I'm 20 years old and am absolutely disgusted with the way my generation reacts to the world. What right do we have to sit around doing nothing when all over the world people are fighting to survive. We need to come together and help one another, not sit idly by and watch the world destroy itself. Do yourself a favor and go outside, lay down on the ground and just stare into the sky, enjoy nature, and maybe something in your mind will change for the better. I used to wish i was born in the fifties so i could have enjoyed the 60's and 70's. But now i realize i was being socially irresponsible. We have the chance to turn the 2010's into whatever we want. There is still hope for our generation. Peace.

Same as the 20th century - For Conviction of conscience is a matter of principle
    -
I think of myself as a Hippie – your opinion is noted for sure,
No I’m not lazy or dirty or weird – and I know not if there is a cure,
I live my life as I do wish to – you may not be my number 1 fan,
But I have my beliefs and my feelings – allow me them if you so can.
Peace, Justice and freedom are uppermost – in the mental list I have in my head,
I am not for oppression and violence – my opinion, I feel, must be said,
When I sit in a crowd, or I meditate – I discus or I think all alone,
For I am my own man, I am a singular – I am not a society clone.
I wish to see harmony general – and that love will obliterate hate,
I want to see peoples united, and that celebrate peace with their mate,
The end of my quest, it is distant – and may be an impossible goal,
Regardless, I’ll continue, endeavour – to attain inner peace in my soul.
Don’t mock as I sit with my flowers – cut out all those jibes at my dress,
Don’t treat me with contempt and with fury – it’s the World that is sat in a mess
I know I annoy you with questions - I know that you wish me away
But I’m here to stay, and I promise – if you listen then you’ll realise one day,
I am not full of hot air and rubbish – there are remedies that can be found,
But we must work together, as comrades – and work out the ideas that are sound,
If you don’t and you shun me forever – don’t take in the things that I say,
I’ll sympathise and continue to irritate – and always I will remain so this way
    :)
