People who meditate are probably more likely to eat healthy than people from the general population. This is probably because of their personality types, however, I wonder if meditating would make people from the general population more likely to eat healthy. Did meditation help you eat healthy?

I would like to think so, most people IMO eat when they are bored, have mixed feelings etc meditation helps you not feel bored and helps you sort out your issues leading to less people who meditate eating poorly

"Probably" is the key word. I myself do not eat any differently, but I was born a meat eater, and only gave up for about two years. After that I didn'r notice any difference between yoga/meditation as a veggy nor as a meaty.

Some meats are actually better for you than veggies. Red meat produces more dopamine in the brain. Your mileage may vary. My experience with vegans is that they never seem happy. But I mean vegan, not vegetarian.

Also death pervades any process of growing and harvesting and transporting food, not to mention that except for loose products like fruits, everything is wrapped in the same foul plastic and whatnot as all other foods, so you still kill and polute. Those who tout the morality of eating a veggy diet are not looking very deeply into the subject.

But when I was very into yoga at first the veggy diet seemed to lighten me up and make me more interrnaly aware. Plus - and this is very important for a ypogic lifestyle - veggy diet passes through the system very fast and doesn't make you as fat, so you will benefit in yoga (Hatha) from veggy diet. Also if you're overweight. Just so long as you don't eat tons of sugar.

And we are finding that certain chemicals are not supplied by veggy or vegan diet. Wiki on it. Things like essential lipids which prevent inflammation.

As for 'personality types' I have met any assortment of people into meditation so that's not valid for contemplation.

meditation is like a panacea for all your problems . I used to have lot of problem in getting adequate sleep . I tried everything got new bed and mattress overlay and nothing worked then I started doing meditation , it helped me lot in reducing anxiety and give me a peaceful good night sleep. Meditation works all around for your mind, body and soul. and yes it also helps you eat healthy.

I started meditating and it helped me control my desires a lot easier and so yes I started eating very much healthier from meditation.

I'm now doing the Kundalini & my diet is mainly veggies.

Not really meditation so much as exercise, for me. If you do the work, you're less likely to ruin it by taking on more calories from junk food (with insane amounts of sodium and other not so great ingredients) than you just burned. Meditation helps though. I've been eating way healthier, and shopping in the produce section way more than the frozen food isles.

I think meditation could help us release tensions, stress and clear our minds. Having a clearer mind could have the thinking that it is right to eat healthy and so there is a possibility that through right thinking, a person could engage himself in eating healthy foods and have good lifestyle.

Yes meditation can help control eating patterns, it maybe indirectly through feeling good about yourself emotionally as well as spiritually. As your practice deepens and awareness of thoughts, sensations and cravings are only passing through your mind.

For example you can only have one thought at a time, so if your mind is screaming CAKE and that was your only thought, you would soon die of hunger and thirst, because you wouldn't have the thought, go to fridge. So by isolating the thought CAKE you soon realize that is only a thought passing through.

You can have a peaceful dominance over these thoughts especially if you practice insight (mindfulness) meditation, this can be particularly good for recognizing destructive patterns in our behavior.

Check out the FREE mindfulness in plain english book by Gunaratana.

There is no better way to start a simple practice than through this wonderful book

    Peace :sunny:

Meditation has helped me eat on a regular and consistent basis. Before I ate at different times, sometimes a lot, sometimes a little. Now I have a routine for eating which is great news for my metabolism.
Funny thing is, I've just 2 minutes ago finished a bacon and egg toastie with loads of ketchup. Yes we should eat lots of fresh produce, but there's no point in being miserable either, right? Have a bit of what you fancy, that's my motto!
