I'm glad to see lots of local groups forming. I was afraid people wouldn't go beyond the hype. It's disappointing though, to see the public ridiculing (through media) of peaceful people wanting basic Life rights. It doesn't help that many don't seem to know what they want. It's not their fault. As basic and simple as it is, it's hard to see from inside the box that the box is no good.
I went to the occupation in Dallas today after work. There was a strong showing with media coverage today and at least a hundred people are still down there camping out. This movement has real potential. Everyone support your local movements. We can make real change here if we play it right. Get out there, people, and make your voices heard!
There was a great showing in Dallas today. This is real folks. It is occurring and we need all the help we can get. Support your local movement and lets make positive change for the country we all love.

So... if this is being touted as a global movement... the battle between the 99 and 1... Shouldn't we, the 99, be demanding global solutions? How about a global declaration of human rights? I don't mean one through the UN (we have one of those already that is ignored)... I mean one, by, of, and for the people. Has anything been solved if the protests in the US only address issues there? Should we not be demanding, as the 99 that we all, around the world have equal rights? Equal rights to life and liberty? Wall st and the corporations have been playing imbalances for years against each other... Even if everything was perfect in the US, as things are right now, the whole world suffers to support it and canada, the uk, and other 'developed' countries. I see some, both here and in the other occupation related places I go calling for things like returning to the original US constitution... How would that solve anything? If there are people that are being taken advantage of in other parts of the world to support the life in developed countries, isn't that just the middle class shifting the burden further down the chain? When we stand, should we not be standing for the entire 99, around the world?
So many in America still believe this business about how only capitalism can work because of all the lazy poor people. First of all, capitalism can't support all the lazy RICH people! Second, more socialist countries like Canada, Denmark, or Sweden are not going under because of lazy poor people. In fact, it sound to me like they are doing better than America by far. I'm participating in the occupy wall-street protests. Even if I don't agree with every single part of it, I feel we need to unite behind something, and this is close enough for me.
You're not telling me you want all companies/corporations to be non-profit? Or is it just about the term inherent?
No, I am saying that people have rights, companies do not. Get rid of the idea that a company can be an entity onto itself (corporation). The whole idea behind corporations is to seperate a person from the liability of their decisions. If there is no liabilty for your decisions, why does it matter what you decide to do? The owner of a company would still have the same rights as anyone else, including the chance to make profit... but never a right... How does that even begin to make sense? There does have to be controls on profits though. They are simple however, they are called taxes without loopholes. It's actually pretty simple once you get rid of the idea of corporations as a companies profit would be the owner's income. Along the lines of fixing things though... The way stocks and such are set up has to be changed. There is nothing wrong with a person selling shares in their company. There is something wrong with the share market dictating the price though. The value of a company shouldn't be determined by investors whims of the day. It should be based on what the company owns and produces. Once again, much simpler without corporations. Of course, some of the problems can't be solved because the people wouldn't want the solutions to them. Currency trading is a huge cause of a lot of problems. The only way to solve it though is to either have a single currency, or at least equivelant valued currencies. To many though that would sound to much like trying to create an evil empire...
I think I see your point. At the same time, if there is a law governing companies, there must be rights. I think the liability IS there (wether you call it corporation or company), at least theoretically. The problem lies elsewhere. It is in the influence that banks and large corporations have. If a small company goes bankrupt .... well, that's just it. If a large corporation goes down it might take a whole country with it. Look at the situation in Europe: the banks way in over their heads because they lent too much money to Greece, Ireland, Spain. If Greece were to default on it's debt, that money would be gone. The whole EU might tumble like a house of cards. Okay, let's call it the right to try and make profit. Unfortunately the system is way too complicated for that. Not all companies are owned by a single person .... in fact most large ones are not.
So... the system shouldn't be changed because the system is too complicated? All your objections are towards the way things are, or wrong. Did the president of BP pay the damages out of his own pocket? Was he held liable for the decisions that allowed the gulf oil spill to happen? He would have been if he had been the owner. Yes, companies do have more then one owner, that is called shares... and along with the profits from those shares of a company should comes shared liabilty for the decisions that are made by the company. Companies, by any name, should not have any rights beyond the rights of the owner(s), which should be the same rights as everyone else has.
No. I'm saying that the changes you propose are unrealistic, not that they are wrong. Sorry, that I don't understand. The president of BP couldn't possibly have done that. He should have been prosecuted like the Thyssen managers have. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/a0c8967a-6917-11e0-9040-00144feab49a.html
yes, a profit, ofcourse... but they ott with the profits... needs balance... need to take responsibility, like a person does... should be more accountable... abso-feckin'-lutely!!! yup GREED... what kind of example is that for our children? that greed is ok? i think not... it is immoral to carry on in the way the corporations have been allowed, by law, to carry on... we need lawyers to remedy the situation where corporations are concerned imho... nice link, thanks feeling a little foolish that i missed that one :blush5:
He and the shareholders should have... Why? Because they are the defacto owners of the company. Did the presidents of the banks the needed to be bailed out get charged? Were they held responsible? No, they were handed more money for the corporations and paid bonuses. As for your argument of. its too complicated. Why is it too complicated? Do you have a problem understanding the concept of responsibility? Someone does something or makes a decision for something to be done, they are responsible for everything that happens as a result. Or do you mean it would be too complicated because then people wouldn't know how to fuck each other the same as they do now? I could go on guessing what it is that you think, but it seems sorta pointless. especially considering if you had a real point to make you could have made it instead of just saying. "Oh, thats too complicated"
What needs to emerge here is a new REAL labor movement . These people must ban together , grow this movement , and demand living wages and demand a higher standard of living . Get rid of these corrupt " labor unions " and start new fresh ones . That haven't sold out to big business . Boycott any business that has moved overseas , or any foreign made product . Drive them out of business , or give them the option of moving back home , and paying a living wage to employees . Cut federal taxes on business , which is the reason they left anyway . Sure they like us to think it's unions and labor costs , but the truth is it's federal taxes that drive them out . We need a new North American union , that would operate as a CO-OP . Dues money would be collected , just as they are in unions now . Except it should be spent differently . Now the dues money is squandered on democrat corrupt politicians and campaigns . Who are all rich to began with , and have more in common now with the g.o.p. , than the working man they are supposed to represent . What's left is squandered on big union bosses lavish lifestyles . It's corrupt and sold out to big business. What if however , a new movement collected dues money from all its members , and began buying and making co-op businesses , plants , factories, farms ,and stores ? That would be 100 % member owned and operated . In other words every dues paying member is an equal member and owner of the business , he or she works for . One man one vote in the company . All money (profits) would be equally divided between these members . They could get REAL living wages , because they don't have a rich owner on their back to make a profit for . In a sense , it would cut out the rich owners and if grown large enough , would destroy the rich elite class itself . Every worker would work hard because he has a REAL vested interest in his or her company , and is paid a living wage . And is really an owner operator. Cut out the top man , c.e.o. , robber baron and declare class warfare on them , like they have on us . It would eventually wipe them of of the face of the earth . And that's what needs to happen . There would be no profit left for them , because all the profit would go equally to the workers , who own the co-op . And there dues money would go to buy more manufacturing houses and plants . Then give discounts to other co-opts in the union for for products and goods , but levy taxes on non members , eventually forcing them to become members themselves for discounts . If you control the means of production , in the workers hands , backed by real numbers of a real democratic union . The upper class would dismantle and starve , just like they are now doing with the middle class . We MUST decimate their numbers and starve them out , like they have the middle class . It's the next logical step for American labor . And it would work ! If we organized ourselves , and really stood together . To say NO MORE OF THIS CORRUPT BULLSHIT ! We have the numbers , not them . Which means WE have the power , not them ! Only if we organize our self into a real cohesive , organized new labor movement in North America . I tell you it would be a force to be reckoned with .
And it needs to be a global movement . To raise the living standard of the whole world not just America . That's were unions dropped the ball to begin with . Big business went global they did not . Leaving them behind . It was a fatal mistake . It has to began in America and spread through the world . And farms must be restored .
new here (obviously, lol) and this is the thread that caught me. i have to say that it feels good to see so much support for the Occupy movement. i want to get involved, and are concerned about my friends who already are. the violence is disturbing, and the continued arrogance of those with power and money makes me want to hurl. i really hope something comes out of this.
