My Korean boyfriend is having a lot of trouble finding a part time job, he only gets offered dodgy ones by Korean and Chinese restaurants wanting kitchen hands paying well below the legal minimum wage and wanting him to work 12 hour shifts. (We live in a Western country). He speaks perfect English and is finishing a university degree. He thinks the employers here are prejudiced toward Asian immigrants. I think he needs me to check his CV and cover letters, and keep applying. I don't believe his race is the issue. Who is right?
Could be because of his race, but I can't think of too many people prejudiced against Asians. There is likely another reason.
At a servo I fill up at pretty regulary the hire allot of pakis and muslim's to do night shift's. I went to get some petrol the other night and there was a woman working at the counter, I asked her if she was having a good day and 'cause she has a pretty strong accent I thought that she said she was having a bad day, so I told her that I was sorry to hear it. She then went on to correct "no, no. maahreeed!" Oh married! She had said she'd gotten married that day. I told her congratulation's and hope that he make's her very happy, but that if it were me, I'd have asked for the night off work... or a few! and she smiled and said it was okay cause she had tomorrow off. I guess you could say that's unfair treatment. Maybe she hadn't given the manager notice like she should have done. I dono. But she didn't seem to either know better/or mind that she hadn't gotten the day off for her own wedding. I'd like to think it's just some people who are like this. Maybe it's different depending on if you live in a rural, or suburban area. I live in a rural area so whatever job's I've had so far have to do with very hand's on work volunteering at a vet clinic, animal rehab's, librarian's assistant at a shire, and working farming, or fruit pick/packing. Doesn't matter what race you are as long as you work hard, and dont mind pitching in for a few beer's afterward's.
Is he a legal immigrant? If not, that could have something to do with it but as he is going to school i doubt that's the case. The job market isn't looking too good anyways so I just keep at it, he'll find something or move to Texas plenty of jobs down here.
Here in Canada, the government, at least in one province, recently proposed an insentive to hire immigrants. They proposed offering between $1000 - $3000 to any company who hired a new immigrant. Needless to say this made many people extremely angry, given the number of people out of work who have lived here their whole lives.
here i'm almost positive that it's illegal to ask about ethnicity on a job application, so i would think most places that he applies probably don't even realize his race. obviously he can legally be there for school, but can he legally work there? i think you might be looking at it backwards. it's not that chinese restaurants are the only non-racist businesses, it's that no one can get a job anywhere but he's being given preferential treatment by the chinese restaurants because of his race.
He's legally allowed to work and study in our country. I knew it was just a matter of him being willing to work and not being too fussy - he has two jobs now.
Don't know witch, western country you hail from but the job market in the UK leaves a lot to be desired for anyone. Whilst I can't speak for indivdual employers policies, the lack of vacancies can make them a deal more choosy in who they deem 'right for them' - Prejudice in whatever form age, sex,(/orientation) physical/mental capabilty and racial background still tales place despite 'all those diversity policies' that are spouted. Working in the industry that you refer to has historically been such that the employees are treated with less than favourable regard - though there will always be vacancies - have faith
I thought you had to have a job before even moving to Canada? Or am I thinking of obtaining citizenship?
Actually, it's the other way around. Companies tend to discriminate in favor of immigrants. We're importing labor during a recession with high unemployment.
where I live in california it is sooooo hard to find a job. I am a white guy and it is hard. and yes some employers are picky about race. there are lots of places here in california that only hire mexicans and no not illegaly I mean the manager and the people in the community just want it to be all mexican. go on citi data and you will find that there are several sub burban areas with 100,000 population of people here in california that are 97% hispanic/latino population. and plenty more with 82% and 70%. actually the official california website says the white population of non hispanic orgin is 38%. and no im not trying to be racist or nothing but from personal experience I have found that lots of these communities are real proud to be brown and will openly say brown pride and If the manager is hispanic or latino the chances are good that he is going to interview the latino applications before the white applications.
