I used to work nights, brutal shift for anyone.

The only way i survived the job was my music. I was the only one in the store who had my headphones in all night tell opening and it saved me loads of times. Now my work starts at 7am and that is much better.

A lot of posters here are American and Canadian so it might be slower during our sleep hours. None the less people are here. Try the forum games sometime, its usually always active.

Surely working in the night is really difficult as first you have to listen to your seniors along with being able to fight sleep as well. Feel sorry for you....

i work nights as a way to help my family. it makes everything more manageable. just had a new kiddo as well. she is the angel.

so school work sucks, and yes, night is hard, but it is lovely to be able to plan my sleep around the activities of my family and be very much involved in our life together, even with the added difficulties...

so, while i hate the activity, i love its functionality

i have been the same way for quite some time now.

seems i can sleep about 4 hours, then as soon as the sun goes down, boom. i am awake.

i guess some people are just creepy like that.

I have insomnia, and have had it for many years now. Even when I'm going through my (brief) spells of sleeping like "most" people do, I'm still up late. All that being said...

I'm one that is on here late (usually)...

and when I last had a 3rd shift aka/graveyard shift, I swore on all things holy that I would not put myself and other human beings thru me working 3rd shift ever again. I triple hell hated working 3rd shift.

Even if I can't sleep, I still lay down and close my eyes by 6am at least. :D

Bless your heart having to work 3rd. I hope you'll at least have the opportunity to "talk" to us here.

:D ^ yes, what an interesting way to put it. Sometimes my body/brain decides I don't even need those 4 hours - and that's when it starts getting interesting. good times. ;)

i always try to take heart that benjamin franklin survived for years with short naps. and smoked weed.

i don't really even smoke weed, though... i do, but it is only for pain. hell, 2 grams can last me 2 months

I work night audit at a hotel, and i've been doing this particular shift(10hrs) for more than five months now and i have yet to adjust to it. Normal people leave work in the evenings or 9 or 10 pm; I'm getting off work at 8am when some people are just waking up. Usually I manage about 5 hrs of sleep and then I am up for the day doing errands or whatever, if I work that night, then I'll take a 3 hr nap so I can prepare myself for the next 10hr shift, it can be brutal. I find that when I'm off it's usually 50/50. Either I stay up all night or i am asleep before midnight, its kind lame.

My friends, family and boyfriend have started calling me narcoleptic.

It would be nice to find out where all the night-owls on HF are.

I really would hate to be in that situation... i was a night owl for years before i tried working the shift. hell, in middle school i remember just sitting up at night trying to get to sleep. i would be awake til 2 or 3, just tossing and turning. i have been a horrible night owl for forever.

i find that no sleep schedule works, though... so, i try and get to bed right after work no matter what. i will sleep for a couple hours or more, depending on how tired i really am. then, if i get up and have a good, long day, i will usually take an hour or 2 before work.

on days that i am really tired, usually wednesday, i will sleep for a good 6 or 7 hours straight, and then that gets me over the hump til the weekend, as i am off friday and saturday nights.

i have blackout shades in my bedroom, by the way... this is pretty important. not so much in the winter, i guess, but really, if you are working 3rd shift, make the place you are working in as bright as possible, and then the room you sleep in as dark as possible. then, when you get up, use bright lights

once every couple of months i need to stay awake for a couple of days to kick start my sleep again, usually starts with a week of late nights and the first half of the day in bed untill it all gets fucked up i just stay awake while my body tries to figure out what the hells going on, 7.42am here and i still havent slept so i'll prob stay awake now, i've been denying making myself a bit cheese on toast for a good couple of hours but since im staying up fuck it.

yeah, I can agree. Sometimes I sleep better when my bf is near.

I thought about getting one of those eye-cover things, but I very much like seeing and would hate to wake up and be able to see anything lol

    a mask?

yeah, we have the blackout shades in our master bedroom, so that generally does the trick...

i have used a mask before, and they aren't that bad, you know... it doesn't take long to get it off if you wake up thinking you hear something.
