I don't think it'll ever happen to that scale.

If it does, I'll shoot and eat the well prepared.

And who would set off this EMP weapon, Skip?

Let me guess... oh yeah, al Qaeda.

I am not worried because the government will protect us. Just give up some more of your rights and things will be OK.

hahaha. i guess that's what most people think.

only other place i've heard about an "EMP weapon" is on Goldeneye 007 for the Wii
i suppose if i play the game enough, i should be able to stop it.

Should the world go under, as it essentially would in this scenario, I'm pretty sure I'd be fine. Electricity isn't a big deal, as we have no need for heating our house. We have plenty of water, meant for washing/etc, but could be drunk in a pinch. Plenty of fish on any of the several beaches located anywhere from 10 to 60 minute walk from our house. Lots of trees bear fruits.

Any way, I just make sure I always keep a bit of cash on hand. Even in a world-ending scenario, there would still be people who would take cash, at least in the first couple of days.

I have knife, needles for sewing, axe and warm blanket. I am ready and I think it would be wondeful if this did happen.

It really won't matter at all. There will be nothing to be done, except if what is left of the gov't decides to retaliate, creating more EM pulses plus lots of radiation which would just make things worse.

BTW, it's MOST LIKELY to be the USA who sets off the EM pulse.

Here is some info on the EMP issue.

    http://www.aussurvivalist.com/nuclear/empprotection.htm

Computers that are sitting in storage that are protected by metal screens (see final quote), will be perfectly fine.

Once the danger of more EMP's has passed, they can be used as long as you have power.

Metal filing cabinets are cheap, sometimes even free if you dont care about the drawers... Put a piece of sheet metal (or metal screen) over the front and you have an excellent faraday box.

The scale of disruption they are talking about would require thousands of high-powered devices, just for one country. Each device would only do significant damage over an area of a few square miles.

    I'm not following.

So I guess you keep yourself and your computer in a Faraday box 24/7 and never have to charge it, right?

No skip, but the computers that are on my shelves in the back room are, as are the multiple hard drives with information from pretty much every aspect of survival that has ever been published (that I have found on the net).

Although I realize that some people may have a hard time understanding this, but some of us don't just upgrade and throw away our old computers. Some of us actually re-use them, store them or dismantle them for parts.

As I said, I will still have computers and access to tons of information after an EMP, regardless of the source...

Even if it was caused by the solar flares going into overdrive and repeatedly hitting the earth. It would be a simple matter to turn a complete room into a faraday cage from which to continue to use comptuers running off of a battery bank that would also be kept in the same room, along with the inverters and other such equipment that needs to be protected.

These things only cause panic in those who aren't prepared for them.

alright macgyver, it's great that you can survive the apocalypse with a paperclip and a toothpick, but it's pretty damn sadistic to think that the probable death of millions of people would be wonderful.

No, it might take a few devices, but depending upon where they explode, they can knock out a whole country.

Let's say there's a nuke heading to the USA. The US sends an anti-ballistic missile up to intercept it. It succeeds, but in the process a huge EM pulse occurs at high altitude. If the payload was big enough, it can affect THE ENTIRE PLANET to varying degrees...

    That's what I'm talkin' about!

Besides which, if a nuke is launched at the US, they won't just fire a missle to take it out... they will fire off their own nukes... and others will fire theirs and so on, until most of the planet has been peppered...

Go back to livin' homeless, make myself a tipi and travel. I prefer it that way anyway, or at least until I find a commune
