What's the name of your home town? Does it have an origin? Mine is San Gabriel, California named after San Gabriel Arcángel.
This is an interesting topic. The name of my hometown is Brighton and I would guess that it's because this is a seaside town in the south of England and it seems like it's always sunny here. But that's purely a guess, no official information...
My "hometown" (i.e, when I'm not stuck in Niagara) is Scarborough... I believe it was named by English settlers who were from Scarborough, England, because it reminded them of home. 1...2....3.... AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.... lol
Issaquah Washington came from a natvie american word, they just changed the spelling some. Squak, or Squawk, as it is sometimes spelled, is a corruption of the Indian name Squowh, pronounced by the natives as if spelled Isquowh
philadelphia, my real hometown, means "city of brothery love" in greek i believe. it's kinda hypocritical cause it's not a very friendly city. no one knows what miami means really... it's kinda strange...
my hometown....err.......hamlet... is called Port Ryerse. It is named after Samuel and Joseph Ryerse(formerly Ryerson) who settled it in 1794. Before that, there were natives living here.... Some neighbours recently recovered an old body of one a few months ago in they're yard. Oh and Samuel and Joseph Ryerse's bodies and their family are all buried like a 2 minute walk from my house in behind the church.. "Some loyalists followed the Lake Erie shoreline to Port Ryerse where Samuel and Joseph Ryerse, who had previously settled in New Brunswick, were enticed with a large grant of land by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe to create a settlement and encourage other New Brunswick Loyalists to settle." Now there is a lot of folky cottagers/year rounders and old hippies.. and their kids... I am one of those kids. haha.
I live in some crap town called LaGrange. Supposedly we have a "sister city" in France, and we have a giant fountain in the center of town with a statue of Marquis de Lafayette on it. Supposedly it's a replica of one in france. (i think the city was called lepuy, but I'm not sure.) This town was named after Lafayette's estate in france. And our high school football team just became the AAA state champs. Other than that, we're pretty boring.
I am from Chicago and it means either stinky onion or wild onion in native american. If you were ever on Lower Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago, you would agree with the word "stinky".............. ~namaste~
my home town of Edmonton started out as fort edmonton. the fort was named after the home town of sir James edgar lake, which was Edmonton in Middlesex England. Fort Edmonton was origianlly a fur trading post on the north saskatchewan river in the 1750s for the Hudsons bay company. it slowly grew untill the 1890s when during yokun gold rush it became a major stop off for prspectors heading north. A lot of them stayed and it grew into larger town. But what made my town get big was the Leduc #1 oil well that fisrt spewed crude oil in 1947 edmonton became an oil industry boom town, and still is. to date Edmoton is canadas 5th largest city at around 900,000 people. the capital city of alberta. and home of worlds largest shopping mall.
my town is named roseville. named after a lady of the evening named rosie who used to meet the trains. (before that it was simply named junction!) i suppose there are several other possible explanations, one or two of which might be more factualy probable, but personaly i'm rather most fond of that one. =^^= .../\...
