Yo, as you young people say these days.

I recently became interested in cultivating mushrooms but couldn't find anyone which any knowledge to discuss it with. I got a couple of mycoboxes (which came with the delicious Golden Oyster Mushroom spore) and will be using these to make 3 cakes. Out of the 3 cakes, I want to fruit 2 and try something with the 3rd cake. I want to break it up and replace it into seperate jars of substrate to carry on colonising the mycelium into, hopefully, jar after jar to make cakes to fruit, setting aside mycelium each time to colonise more jars. Is this a realistic way of looking at growing the mushrooms or is it more sustainable to spore print?

And substrate: What's your favourite mix and method? By method, I mean the mixing, cleaning, sterilising, jarring and inoculating. There are a lot of ways out there.

if your going to do that.. Learn Liquid culture. all you need is some corn syrup and honey.. Get that sterile , Inoc with spores.. now you have a liquid culture 1000000000000000000000X's that of spores..

Buy pre made Rye grain bags for Legal shrooms, Inoc with desired strain..

Liquid culture, gotcha. Have you ever tried it yourself? Would placing mycelium in new substrate still work, just not as well?

When you say premade rye grain bags, you are referring to bags specifically designed for mushroom cultivation? I would be tempted to purchase them if they were a good price for my legal mushrooms, as they sound very easy (no birthing etc?) but my question also applies to a method for someone - not me of course - using Ecuadorian PC, beginning in the mycoboxes.

yes.. I dont buy many spores, but still do.

if you are working from a perti dish, yeah.. But to break off bits from another culture and just toss it in the jar< NO.. not saying it cant work at all. /just risky contamination.

yes. They are only $9.00 ea, when you buy a few at a time. single is like $15.00 I think..

Sorry, your grammar has prevented any understanding of your message.

Thanks, Orison, I must ask why you don't buy the grain for a cheaper price and sterilise it yourself? Surely it is not that hard a thing to do? Have you ever tried? If I were breaking the cake and depositing parts of the culture into new substrate in a glove box then would I avoid that contamination risk?

I'm no expert but seems like even if you avoided contamination while burying your little chunk of mycilium, the colonization would be slow as hell. From what I've read, the longer it takes to fully colonize the greater chance of becoming contaminated.

When spawning anything you should go 1:5 spawn to sub. Mix well and let recover. When breaking grain up for spawn do it a day ahead of time. The myc will jump back and rip through the next nute source.

Now as to the oysters you want to spawn the grain to a celulose sub. Such as shredded straw or newspaper, with soy ink of course.

As to your friend with the Eq PC, yes they could fruit in the bag or place it in a dark sided container, tub, and case it with pastureized coir.

    Best of luck

    Peace

Using cakes to spawn more cakes or any sort of G2G with cakes is contamination waiting to happen. If you are going to use only one cake I am going to suggest something I would rarely if ever suggest doing. Let me explain something first. Field capacity - This is where if you squeeze your substrate a tiny trickle of water will come out for 2-3 drops then stop. This is field capacity. This is what you want your subs to be at in mycology. I am going to suggest spawning to field capacity verm. Break up the cake in a baggie and mix in with the same volume of field capacity verm. I wouldnt suggest this normally I just cant see pasteurizing 1 cup of substrate. Put this in a tray covered and let sit until it is fully colonized. Once fully colonized put into your fruiting chamber which I hope is a SGFC(Shotgun Fruiting Chamber)
