"Rights" often go too far as to impede on the moral character that this nation was founded on. Extremists don't see it that way though.

These are the asshats that dont need a big brother to turn life to censored shit. Just like the ignoramuses from Farenheight 451. People are idiots... I hate parents that expect everyone else to parent their children. How about you be a real parent, actualys care and read the book along with your child, then have an inteligent conversation with your kids about what goes on in the book. Depending on the area the kids allready done most of the shit Salinger wrote about anyway....

    Fucking stupid people...

And people who insist on dictating "moral character" to other people go so far as to impede the SECULAR basis that this nation was founded on. Bible-banging fundies don't see it that way, though. :)

Well, the MAJORITY of the district seem to have no problem with the book, so looks like the book should stay, no? :)

Catcher in The Rye is my favorite book. I'm going to name one of my kids Holden.

There are schools here in Florida that have banned "The Diary of Anne Frank". Why? Because it's depressing to talk about the Holocaust! *Roll eyes* I love how some parents want their kids to think the world is all sunshine and lollipops where nothing bad ever happens.

Maggie, I think you summed up my early high school education in your posts here! Wow. I went to a private Christian school and I was kicked out specifically for this reason. We were not allowed to read The Scarlet Letter or Catcher in the Rye. Catcher is my favorite book (I wanted to name my dog Holden), I've read it at least 20 times! My English teacher refused to allow me to read it for a book report in 11th grade, actually she wouldn't approve any of the classics that I wanted to read. I challenged the teacher and the cirriculum because I wanted to take AP English, and my school did not offer it. I wanted a better education than they could provide. They made my parents withdraw me from the school stating that I was insubordinate because I refused to read what was on their book list. Guess what was on the list though, Baby Sitter's Club, Sweet Valley High, and Chicken Soup books. Gag! What the fuck could those books possibly teach about LITERATURE. (And yes, I've read them, so I am entitled to an opinion on them)
