I have never been able to watch that footage of those people jumping. I can't even let myself think about it. The whole story is really sad, but another thing that really bothers me is knowing how many other people have died since then in tragedies all over America and all over the world, and the media acts like it is nothing. They are just as dead as the 9-11 victims, and their families and friends have suffered just as much. I see both sides of this issue, but I just don't feel right about it. We need to be careful about making one kind of victim out to be a lot more important than another.
In one way or another everybody is a victim of something. None of it is right, but that is the world we live in. Is one victim different from another? NO. How they became a victim is though. Until we can all get along and not be jealous of what somebody else has, or worried that they might beat us at something then we are going to continue to be this way. I know that will probable never happen. Greed and jealously will always be in the way and that my friend is a shame. It is a great planet we live on, we all have families and for the most part we all intend to do good, if only we could all work together.
Dead is dead. The fact that incidents are weighted is stupid. Let's say for instance that my mother died in 911. Then let's say that some drunk douchebag drives his car through her house and kills her.. Either way, I'm not going to go out and try and get the whole world to sympathize with me. That's selfish.
That's the point. If your enemy can NEVER be fully defeated, or at least can't be PROVED defeated, there's always an excuse to take more, to usurp more, but only to get the terrorists..... you don't care, you're not a terrorist, are you? Also, terrorist means anyone we disagree with, nowadays, by the way. People here did some thing with thousands of tiny american flags and shit..... Yeah, show patriotism and support in the government that first spectacularly failed you, and then raped you of your freedoms to make up for that failure. They hated our freedom, and wanted to turn america into a paranoid totalitarian state with secret prisons and executions and torture and theocracy and circular logic and kangaroo courts...... They seem to have won. *edit* to those talking about those brave men going to repress the rest of the world to let us keep doing what we're doing-sorry, no. That might be what they think they're doing. If you knew anything about 9/11 or the causes of it, it's the US fighting proxy wars in the muslim world and generally shitting all over them just as islam was calming down, and PLACING saddam and others in power, etc. And placing troops in medina/mecca/saudi arabia in general, to support the illegitimate government there because it suited our interests, like all the other people we make hate us by propping up brutal dictatorships that don't represent the people. *edit to follow and expand on the last one, written considerably later* also, the US is what cultivated terrorism in the muslim world in the first place, to keep out the soviets. Then we walked in.... what did we THINK they'd do to keep us out? The US is acting in an utterly assenine fashion, which is what caused 9/11 in the first place.
I dont think you get many agreeing their with you that there is a strong link between 9/11 and either war in Iraq or Afghanistan Dont get me wrong, fully support going into Afghanistan, Taliban are nasty little fuckers. Same should really be done with Somalia at the moment though, famine there is the worst the worlds seen in 100 years and man made, and the pirate thing has made the east coast of africa a no go zone, which affects international shipping Americas current economic woes really have nothing to do with any war. Far more about China continuing to hit 10% growth and buying up all your debt, undermining your manufacturing sector. And world food shortages a couple years back. If anything your governments spending on war made the situation less worse, as all the related industries that spring from the war machine are phenominal and much of them domestic. But 9/11 didnt really change anything, especially globally. China, Russia, the EU - three out of four of the big players dont really have much to do with it or what resulted from it Yeah, seems every bad guy has links to Al-Qaeda
I remember watching the different news channels in the days that followed the death of Osama Bin Laden, some programs went out to ask the public how they felt about his death. Two different channels compiled 2-4 minute segments, video clips or people (of all ages) stating that they had no idea who Osama Bin Laden was. They asked who he was... I also very clearly remember watching 9/11 live on television when it happened. It was covered on every news channel for weeks following the event. After awhile, once they started using Osama Bin Laden as the face of the event, he was all over the news, he was talked about everywhere. Then the great silence fell over all the news channels about 9/11 and Osama over a few years once the war broke out. Why? Because of the great inconsistencies in the story. "If Osama is hiding there, why is the military over there?" It was very hush, hush. In more recent years news programs and politicians alike have been very careful to play down Osama Bin Laden's role. I watched some of the anniversary program the other day. Every time it got brought up, be it a politician or a news anchor, everyone was so damn quick to be sure to remind us that, 'Even though Osama Bin Laden is dead, the terror threat of Al Qaeda is still very real.' There was even that little "terror incident threat" during the anniversary. People were out in force in more than one place. I think it will be a long time before we're ALLOWED to get over 9/11. The further away we get from Osama and the wars, the more we're reminded that there's still other big bad boogeymen out there, waiting to hurt us. We're not allowed to move on, the government needs this to keep us in check.
That's the reality of the thing, right there. Today I was looking at a large poster that had been put up a week or so prior to the anniversary. There where dozens of messages and signatures. Many, to the point of probably being more than half, said things about supporting our troops, about never forgetting, there where messages congratulating our troops on getting the bad guys (iraq, I expect.... I didn't see a single reference to osama, or even al-queda, recall that iraq became the 9/11 guys way back when), messages thanking our troops for terrorizing the world so that we can be safe here at home..... I agreed with a handful of messages that said something about the people that actually died on 9/11 without something else unrelated about iraq. But there was only one thanking the people who re-hijacked the 4th plane, and none saying anything about the firefighters or rescue workers.... So lots of thanks to the hands of evil, lots of scapegoating, and one person who had a clue what the day should mean and who the heros actually are/where.
People have their conspiracy theories and I respect whatever they believe, however, you can't tell me that this war was going to happen regardless of the fall of the twin towers. Those buildings falling and lives lost are what prompted that war to start as quickly as it did in my opinion. My husband enlisted in the military on 9/9/01 and went to war on 6/3/2003 and really hasn't stopped. Is it directly because of 9/11? No. Its because we are dealing with some scary shit and scary people over there that do have the power to create another World War. I don't agree with going to war with Iraq, but the majority of the middle east is just as hostile towards us. The Taliban is fucked. My husband is doing some special training in order to return to Afghanistan under some black operations/mercenary work on the front-lines. However, going to war with Somalia shouldn't be something we should focus on while we are trying to "rebuild" all these other governments in the middle east. I agree about the economy. However, this war is bringing us down trillions of dollars. It may have no global effect, but as a nation, this is a pretty big blow to the federal government's wallet. Federal/state employees are all on hiring freezes/raise freezes and are losing benefits because of the money being lost from this war. Some might argue with me that it isn't caused by the war, but my family who works for the state is proof that it is, considering all of their freezes started around 2005 which is 3 years earlier than the economic meltdown. 9/11 has no effect on you, nor should it. And I pray no country has to endure it. As an American and an army wife and someone who watched this tragedy unfold before my very eyes, it still hits home for me.
After reading some of the other comments in this thread, I'd also like to add something. I don't agree with how our government has handled the situation of 9/11 itself. Like stinkfoot mentioned, we are in a police state now. The government just loves knowing they can ban a 90 year old woman from boarding a flight all because she wouldn't take her adult diaper off for a scan. There are many things we've taken overboard because of 9/11, however, I will always believe that I lost my best friend in Afghanistan, a cousin in one of the towers, and that my husband puts himself on the line every day BECAUSE OF 9/11 and the threats our country faces from the Taliban every day.
There is a distinction if you make one. I see desperate acts. Desperate people are not in touch with their own will.
THAT was my point. every commercial we piss away to show this up on tv, they are laughing at us and probably thinking "hahahhha we did that to them!!!" im not saying shove it under the mat....just let it go. stop showing it. its been 10 years. enough. you wanna talk about something depressing. look on how this country is going. look at when they blew that plane of good men and women up. you wanna see america in action? show footage on us throwing a nuke on iraq and being done with them oh no thats un-american
Lets face it folks the terrorists have won (or at least accomplished there mission) The U.S. economy is in shambles, were living in a police state, and 10 long years of war have sucked the life’s blood out of this country. We're holding onto the past as if it was yesterday; not 10 years ago. H
