What shocked me this week was discovering the currently destitute condition of Italy due to Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi - what a filthy piece of garbage- having sex with underage girls, ties to the mafia, all sorts of perjury, basically the laundry list of criminal charges, but still holds his reign over the political position while controling his nations media. Silvio Berlusconi owns literally all of Italian television. He assigns all the castors and directors of every show put on tv. All his reality shows are cast by people who are under his personal group of affiliates in one way or another- and therefore, there are no campaign ads allowed to run but his, and technically it's "fair game' BECAUSE HE OWNS IT- HE'S ONE OF THE TEN RICHEST MEN IN THE WORLD ACCORDING TO FORBES. BUT, ITALY'S ECONOMY IS ONE OF THE WORST IN THE WORLD, ACCORDING TO A CERTAIN ECONOMICS MAGAZINE JUST PUBLISHED THIS JUNE 2011. Here is another catch-ITALY is very culturally steeped in a patricarchal tradition where women are objectified, and, just as they are in America, put in two distinct categories: whore and housewife - you are one or another at any moment, but the concept that these definitions existing in general are abhorrent and downright UNETHICAL, CRUEL, and SPITEFUL. With that cultural factor in mind, Berlusconi has driven his nation's lower classes into an economically destitute condition, and then serves them up a brainwashing slew of debauchery, euphoria, and a taste of his own power and financial success and glamour- a chance to be an impression of his own narcissiscm- how does he do this? Many men, but for obvious reasons, particularly WOMEN (due to the higher level of interest, and because of the easier level of objectification) from the poor and lower middle class now feel their only hope for economic success is to become a "veline" (a tv star ) (a "celebrity" or "pop star" in our country) or a reality star- and for alot of women their ultimate goal, just like in this nation in may be to marry a football player or actor/celebrity- in Italy the girls hope to marry a Soccer Player- but the auditions are blanket objectification. So the poor are being fed this mirage and pipe dream by Silvio Berlusconi while he robs them of their real money. They don't have the resources,as Silvio owns all Italian media, therefore they naievly consider his deception worth sacrificing THEIR self-worth for.
