People should Boycott whole foods for many reasons. The most important is they lie to their consumers by advertising they support local organic farmers. When they have bought out health food store chains in the past ,the first thing they did is they cancelled alot of the previous contracts they had with local farmers. They try to buy low quality mass produced organics from california ,china and other poor nations around the world. They don't use any organic food in their salad bars or prepared foods items that they make. Most of their 365 line is non organic. If they support organics so much ,why is 85% of their food non organic. They have also been lying to their customers for years by saying they don't sell or use any food item that contains gmos.Well now they admit they have and the excuse was most of the soy ,corn, canolla ect. was contaminated. They said it is a customers decision to decide if they want to buy foods with GMOs or not.Well then why arent they using more organic food items like their previous health food store chains they bought out used to use. They have been monopolizing the industry to long and lowering the quality and increasing the price of organic foods in america. They treat their workers like dirt and enslave poor people in foriegn countries to get cheap labor. The C.E.O John Mackey publicly stated only the rich and privledged like himselm deserve health care. The company projects itself through lies and deceptions. DON'T SHOP AT WHOLE FOODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sources?

I don't shop at whole foods because it would cost 10 dollars in gas to sit through the 10 redlights dotting yuppie suburban hell, but I've never really seen any proof that they are selling GM products. Earlier this year I read a news article that Whole Foods caved to pressure and began selling GM alfalfa, but now the only information I can find insinuates that Whole Foods fought against the deregulation of GM alfalfa the entire time and denied supporting any GM food.

I get the picture that they were critisized for their support of a compromise with organic companies and GM giants and somehow that metamorphasized into a rumor that Whole Foods was selling GM products.

I have the original article that talks about Whole Foods selling alfalfa in my email somewhere, I'll try to find it and post it here. I can't find any information on that now so it might be the product of irresponsible journalism.

Either way, you are correct in that Whole Foods supports mass produced organics rather than supporting the local farmer. I would rather go to the local farmers market and buy produce that comes from less than ten miles away than to support Whole Foods and buy their products, which could possibly come from 2000 miles away.

I just found this article: http://www.prwatch.org/node/9903 but there's no way to know if there is any truth to it.

Whole Foods is unbelievably expensive. Same with Trader Joe's. I'd rather support my local farm stand and local butcher for my foods anyway

Thanks for the replies out there.I agree whole foods is Whole paycheck. This corporation is a publicly traded commodity.Whole foods sells shares of their corporation on the stockmarket. They are all about profit, profit, profit. That is it.They don't care about nothing else.It is much better to support local farmers markets or a regular grocery store that sells organic food and help the local economy ,then to spend it at Whole Foods and who knows where those stockholder are from.[maybe from another country]

I worked at wholefoods 8 yrs ago

that's what we called it when we shopped there. Otherwise it was 'the whole'

at that time, i was told that the official policy was not to claim non-gmo (because of wind pollination), I've heard it rumored that they helped lobby against non-gmo labelling

Good, sustainable organic produce is a rare find, especially if you're not in an agriculturally diverse area

Whole foods is not a beacon of exemplary ethics, they are very much a capitalist yuppie greenwashed junkfood peddling chain

well thats sad, theres one that moved in not that far away from where we live, rents are always going there, guess I should tell them this, doubt they would care though somehow, I kind of knew something was up, when right across the street there are a bunch of plants, with little plastic ribbons tied around them for some reason, like they are being experimented on or something, I've repeatedly taken off these ribbons because we feel like its disrespectful to nature, and the keep being put back on, seemingly for no reason, stop binding the plants!

There also have been many pest and wild life removal trucks there, and its not even a place with many animals like that, its just sad, its like they want no nature to flourish there at all, wtf?

not very wholistic seeming to me

I guess its some relief that it probably doesn't have to do with the Synagogue thats up the street from them that was there before, that wouldn't make sense anyways, its been there a while and there were no wierd plastic ribbons or trucks until this point.

Tried talking to the lady at the door of the apartments about it (the apartments are also new) basically she said, well, it doesn't effect me, I said, well you know everything IS connected, she would not admit to this and shut the door on me, weird stuff.

Thankfully, in other places, it seems like cooler things are happening, loggers have gone out of business and now there are astrology reading and psychics in the same spots, kind of funny, but I don't know I've always pictured those kinds of people as being well, hippies, and having some kind of wholistic environmental consciousness, maybe I'll go in for a reading, I think magic definitely helps nature. Not cheesy magic that is constantly saying its just fake, that magicians do, but real magic, enchantments, wizards, psychics all of it seems to stem from harmonizing with the natural energies and patterns of nature.

^This. This is the best way to go.

However, many food items cannot be acquired in this area. This includes, but is not limited to, nutritional yeast, sea weeds, many types of seeds and nuts, certain grains, and produce. When it comes down to it, I'd much rather support the local health food store. They sell no inorganic produce, and are family owned. But it's small... and, though they do offer a wide variety of things (including all that I listed), not everything can be bought from it.
My mom and I go to Whole Foods almost every tuesday, as it's on the way home from dropping my sister off. I will admit that I do enjoy shopping there, and really like the food bar. (It's nice to be able to have a break from preparing my own meals, but whenever we go out to eat, my choices are limited to either plain pasta or salads, since most are not very vegan-friendly. And though Whole Foods may also be inorganic like the restaurants are, I at least have a choise of what I want to get)

But all in all, it is Big Business. I am well aware that John Mackey is a capitalist, and for that, I cannot say I idolize him. However, I do remember reading that he donates much of his profit to animal organizations (although, I have to search this more to confirm it). Whole Foods is at least a step up from Walmart, and even a step up from Trader Joe's (since Trader Joe's sells almost exclusively its own brand, giving you no option to even support the little guys, i.e Bob's Red Mills, Almond Breeze, etc.)

But it is most definitely a step down from going to local, organic farmers and ranchers, shopping at the Farmer's Market, signing up for a CSA or joining a Co-Op, or growing your own crops and raising your own animals! ;)

I do perfer farmers markets instead of whole foods and growing my own, but especially in the winter some items may be hard to find organic. what is one to do? I go to wholefoods only as a last resort when i cant find organic foods elsewhere.
