I have a script for oxycontin for Tx of severe back pain. Recently it was increased and I'm having some problems. Can oxycontin cause anxiety or even panic attacks? Any info would be appreciate greatly.Thanks.
I would say that oxy does the total opposite and relives anxiety and panic attacks. It's a downer so it won't cause panic attacks or anxiety...well it shouldn't anyway. It has always helped my anxiety and made me feel good.
Oxycodone would actually reduce anxiety in most people. HOWEVER, I have read accounts of people getting freaked out and uncomfortable on opioids that lack a super-sedating element such as Oxycodone, Fentanyl, and Buprenorphine, and especially Tramadol.
The only time i got anxiety from opiates was from any amount of tramadol. However, i have had a friend who started getting bad anxiety from consistent oxy use. So its deff possible
I usually get some anxiety when my dose is wearing off, at the very beginning of withdrawls. In fact, that's one of the things that lets me know that it is time for my next dose, I can't stop yawning and I get really anxious. Is it possible your Oxy was wearing off and you were ready for your next dose?
Contrary to what most people would think, Oxy most definately DOES bring on panic attacks in some people,me being one of them. It doesn't happen everytime I take them, just on occasion. It usually starts being noticable to me about the same time I start feeling the effects of the Oxy. It used to be more often but as I've gotten used to them more they happen less and less, but still do happen. It helps if you're relaxed and not all hyped about anything else before dosing for me. there's been times I've had to take a half a Xanax after the Oxy to stop the attacks. Panic attacks suck at any time, but it's even more so to me when the medicine causes it. Best of luck man.
I'm not an expert but there is something called paradoxical reaction with medication. Pretty much what it sounds like, medicines have the opposite effect than they should have (for example oxycotin causing you to be anxious rather than sedated), but I have only really heard about this happening with benzos and add meds. I still think it's something to consider though. I've had anxiety on opiates when I feared I had gone too far on two seperate occasions. The first when I was just getting into harder opiates(back when a 20 mg line of the old OCs got me going good) and I snorted 30mgs of Opana. The second was my first time speedballing, felt good at first and then I felt like I was going to die. What im getting at is maybe the dose you got bumped up to is too strong for you and the stronger effects are causing some anxiety and panic. I don't know though, just kind of throwing stuff out there.
Thanks to all of you for your Oxy insights. I'm doing a pain management clinic and so far feel pretty good about their respect of my concerns. I gonna try to bail off the Oxy ride and find another way of resloving the pain. Gonna start with an epidural in a week or so. Hell if they told me dog shit would cure the pain I'd slap the shit outta old Shep.
