Fixing outdated info = Byron Bay no hip anymore

Byron Bay Australia, and surrounding hills are no longer hippy havens, Byron hasn't been for more than 12 years.

Byron's an over priced yuppy tourist trap, ask the locals.
It's also radio active, toxic waste dump covered up by the Australian government - check with the local university.

Byron hippie mecca ended some time in the 1990's what's left now are working holiday packpackers in tie-dye t-shirts and glued on dreads for tourists, no joke. Tourists wouldn't know a real hippie if one fell on them that's why they think there's still a hippie scene there, but reality is it's fake.

Real hippies are more likely to get busted in byron, cause the yuppies don't like them and call the police if they see a real hippie a mile away, so real hippies stopped going to byron. Even the rich hippies left, check the real estate listings for all the million dollar hippie houses and farms for sale, those places are empty, nobody there no more.

The hills are now filling up with retirees and million dollar homes with floral curtains and matching slip covers.

FYI: The folks you may see around Byron with dreads and hippie clothes wandering around are backpacker tourists who go home and have straight jobs and normal lives and are only hippies on weekends. Most of them don't even drive eco friendly cars.

 

If you want a hippie scene so badly why not create one yourself in your own neighborhood? Find folks online and meet weekly for drum circles and craft and swap markets. It's what they used to do in Byron which kept the scene alive for a few decades until too many folks new about it and developers and yuppies moved in. Also instead of moving to the country to start a commune, buy a few houses in a cheap neighborhood and ecofy them to create your own community with modern amenities and less internal politics over practical matters, such as building buildings. Bring hippie to the urban environment as they did in Haight Ashbury in the 60's. You can make it work if you work at it and learn from the mistakes of the past.

Byron Bay is ridiculous. I went there in early 2006 and have never been back. I will probably never go back to that stupid pretentious place.
