Hi Everyone, I'm 16, male. I want to start learning to sing, but I don't know how feasible it is to do (without lessons?), or what I have to do in order to sing properly. I play guitar in a band with a few other guys, and recently we decided that our singer isn't what we really want, and he doesn't want to commit time to the band anyway, so we parted with him. Now our band is left with a guitarist (me), a drummer, a bassist, and a multi-instrumentalist who just fills in wherever he can. None of us have been singers. I have been and still am in an amateur choir club kind of thing, but it's not serious at all. The rest of the band decided that I should sing for our upcoming practices gigs, at least until we find another singer (if we do). The bassist tried singing too; he can't really sing pitches but tries anyways, which sounds funny. The problem is, I'm afraid that in my attempts at singing I'd have bad technique and ruin my voice, or I'd sound awful and it would make the whole band look bad. Or both. Do you think I have to get a teacher (which seems like too much trouble to go into when we could get someone else), or is it possible for me to learn to sing by myself, with some guidance, maybe? If the latter, does anyone here have any guidance for me so I can sing properly? We do indie/rock stuff, and I'm sort of baritone range. Thanks a lot in advance for anything anyone can offer.
> Maybe, if you are in a choir thing there is someone (or two) within that group who could help? -Have you asked the tutor of your group their advice? > Maybe, if you could 'share' the vocals with others in the group, (to a degree of appropriate period) - Which may divert attention from the projection (if you + Co are not that confident ? > Maybe, try out acoustic version at a mall or fete/show may give you confidence in an environment of critical reaction (if you are good/ bad at least you'll get direct feedback) Just a couple of thoughts Be Bold and Conquer
