Is this a stupid question? I like drinking wine and smoking weed, when I was young I liked taking speed and ecstasy etc. I also used to take mushrooms I just view it as something I did when I was young, I don't avoid drugs now I just don't find myself in the situations where drugs are about because of work, family etc Does taking drugs make you a hippy? Why do hippies take drugs? Is drug taking part of hippiness? Can I buy some drugs?

First question. Answer is no. If it did every speedfreak punk, crackhead, junkie, alcoholic and acid casualty would be a hippie. Second Question. Why does anyone take drugs? But the short version is. A part of the classic hippie archetype is dissatisfaction with the establishment. From the Law to the Church. There are alot of hippies who were/are seeking alternatives to western religion that kind of latched onto more traditional ways. Alot of Aboriginal Rituals (Aboriginal used in the anthropological meaning as the people who were in an area first) used traditional psychadelics and cannaboids combined with dancing and music (sounds like a Dead Show to me). Third Question. Answer no. There are also hippies that in their search for alternate spirituality got Indian Gurus who promoted abstinence from drugs to promote a clearer mind. Then there are others who tried drugs and didn't really like them. Final Question. Are you a Narc? Stay Brown, Rev J
Hippies do drugs for the same reason anyone else does drugs. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but reality kinda sucks sometimes.
To me, being a hippie was about radical changes in consciousness - breaking out of the strait-jacket of the 1950s - I was a teenager then! In my mind it took LSD to not just be aware that there were problems, but to show The Way. Being a hippie was dropping acid and dropping out. It was about changing my mind.
Normally drugs are taken because the alternative is worse - illness (pharmaceuticals, antibiotics etc) pain (opiates), anxiety (antidepressants) or living with yourself (alcohol). Psychedelics are different, they are taken because they are seen to improve your state of mind. Though I suppose that could apply to alcohol as well.
