advice on growing out dreads

i really want dreads. i have a few forming but i want to know the best way to grow them out and just need some good advice so i dont make any mistakes. i have shoulder length hair and put a few beads to help. what is the best way to grow them???

If you 'want' your hair to 'dread' just give 'it' lots of time. It's gonna take a long time before your 'hair' becomes 'dreads'

I just assume that the intent is to be using inverted commas, they're just more of a pain to find. After all, surrounding a word with apostrophes would be a sin of the utmost severity.
