During the months of May and June I was travelling around Central America with my friend. We ended up in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico to see the ruins there. Our guide was Maya, his name was Guadalupe, and at the end of our tour he offered us mushrooms "para hablar con Pacal" translation: To speak with Pacal. Pacal is one of the most important Maya Kings, so much so he is elevated to the status of a God.

My friend and I bought a bag of mushrooms for 200 pesos, which is about 20 dollars. These shrooms were different from the mush I have bought in Canada. They were darker and almost tasteless (which was relief since I really dont like the taste of dirty socks). I suppose they had been found growing wild in the jungle, rather than grown by someone. I like to think they were found growing in the jungle near the ruins that have not been escavated.

We were going to take the shrooms right away, at our hostel in the jungle (called the Maya Bell) but we decided to wait for the daylight instead. We left Palenque and took a bus to San Cristobal de las Casas where we hooked up with a friend of a friend of ours.

He invited us to climb one of the many mountains surrounding San Cris. We journied out to the edge of town, found a quite place at the base of the mountain, and piece for piece shared the mushrooms between three people. We ate and listened to a brief story about the Maya and their beliefs.

Before the mushrooms took hold, we started to climb up the mountain. Eventually, after sometime, we reached a lookout point built by the local Maya. Ive included a picture of the view.

Once we decided that we would stay in this spot, my friend took out a hit of LSD from his wallet. We split the hit in three. This was my first time taking LSD and it had been many years since taking shrooms. I was a little hesitant, but I thought when else would I get such an experience, I may aswell go for it!

Thank the Creator I did, as it ended up being the most beautiful thing I can remember. I wasnt very talkative, nor was I laughing. I was in total awe of the beauty before my eyes. The entire city was moving, breathing, pulsing with life! The colours were amazing! and the sounds incredible! Such beauty, it filled my heart and soul.

Out in the field I saw a message written in the grass but everytime I tried to read it the message would change making it impossible to read. I suppose I wasnt meant to get that message that day.

It was amazing! beautiful! and when the sun went down I watched as the sky shifted and the clouds changed so quickly. It was time to leave the mountain. On the walk down I said thank you to the Universe, thank you to the Creator, for giving us such a blessing on this day.

Can't imagine what that felt like, especially in that view and with that mythology/culture fresh in your mind :)

I wonder if the message in the grass was that the grass has a message, not in english or even words . . . "Thus!"

it was incredible! i loved the closeness i felt with the land and the all the newly learned information about a people that were so stong...

whatever the message was in the grass, it wasnt meant for me to read. haha perhaps it was written in some grass language ;)

this story is hard for me to tell, as it was so visual. and the visual aspect is lost to me in a way, its like my eyes can remember exactly the way it looked. all i have left now is a feeling of awe when i recall that day in chiapas. that and a need to be so very grateful that it was given to me.
