I wonder if there is new and cutting edge software either already out there are about to be released (or even being worked on)

Think about if Hunter S. Thompson (rest in peace :() or some of those other great writers got to use some of their genius working with cutting-edge software that melded their great writing with top-notch visuals blended and melded in as well. like a comic book writing software or a movie writing software or something like that

software for writers....there's some money in that!

where are those software makers at??

    "work me doing" lol....jk

(hopes God saves Hunter S. That was a sad story, he created so much good. I vote that he deserves a second chance)

there are programs such as NewNovelist and so forth... i've tried a few, but invariably (inevitably?) they are just glorified wordprocessor/database combos

there's quite a bit of those applications, windows, mac, or linux. just google it. there are varieties of whats your flavor too, like if you want just a completely blank canvas so you dont have distractions, or you have toolbars, etc.

    Check out final draft
    http://www.finaldraft.com/

I'm not a writer and really know nothing about any of this stuff, but
I'm an IT Buyer at a local University and one of the faculty requested it in one of our small labs on campus.

Do you know how to use LaTeX? Most academic writers use this program for typesetting professional printed material. See my image basket (under Mathematics and Physics) for a sample of professionally formatted LaTeX documents.

If you need a software program for proofreading, you can take a look at Panopreter Plus, it will read out any text with natural-sounding voices, and save the spoken speech into MP3 audio files.
