I've reached that awkward age where my brain can't function in the morning without coffe and my stomach can't function with it. Can anyone recommend a legal caffeine-free energy drink that actually works?

Energy drinks typically contain tons of vitamins and ginseng as was mentioned previously. So, I'd say slowly wean yourself off the coffee to reduce headaches and take multivitamins and maybe some ginseng. I recently quit caffeine and after a month I quit feeling like I needed it so badly. Good luck.
'Tis not an awkward age, but an awkward lifestyle. The need for stimulants to keep you going is severely unnatural, at any age or condition in life. Anyway, as for a non-caffeine/stimulant energy drink, the only one I know of is FRS, which has quercitin, an antioxidant, albeit a synthetic one. I prefer a nice tea. Green tea may have caffeine (much less than coffee or black tea), but its still one of the reasons (+ lots of fish) Japanese generally live longer than anybody anywhere other than the Mediterranean (mainly olive oil). Mint works for this, has no caffeine, tastes great without sugar, and is also a great nighttime tea, oddly enough. Ginseng is wonderful for this, but you sound like your looking for a quick fix. You need to consume ginseng everyday for a while before you notice the effects (usually), but they are well worth it. It doesn't just provide energy, you feel great all around. It balances the entire system.
Maybe giving up coffee isn't the answer. Maybe you just need a new way of ingesting it might I suggest: [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yskHAiCc5g Stay Brown, Rev J
I decided to give up coffee cold turkey .... Again. I have been done with coffee for about 10 days. It is odd that I crave it. I have been drinking green tea, taking a multi-vitamin, trying to up my water intake and an occasional soda. I felt that coffee made me more irritable (could definitely be a placebo effect) and I am doing all that I can to eliminate that feeling. I still crave, though, one of those iced-coffee drinks from DD. Yum ....
I switched from soda to green tea recently. I know green tea still has caffeine in it, but it gives you such a longer lasting, more naturally awake feeling. I can drink one cup in the morning and I'll still be riding a wave of energy well into the afternoon. It doesn't give you the caffeine jitters either. I've also noticed it makes my skin and eyes a lot brighter. Another one I would suggest is making an herbal tea with Eleuthro in it. Eleuthro is an herb that helps your body repair itself from physical stress. I noticed after drinking a eleuthro tea every day for a couple of weeks that I started getting ridiculous amounts of natural energy.
Watch tv for twenty minutes and you will get all kinds of offers. Some new non-fda approved supplement that helps you abandon that early morning feeling. Or try and eat food before you drink the coffee, that might help too...
The only legal stimulants other than caffeine are possibly ephedra and the related-xanthine compounds (similar to caffeine) in tea. Other than that, you'd have to do something like exercising to wake yourself up without caffeine.
