So I want to work with mentally retarded adults, helping them get out on their own and get them living independently. But I don't know what major would let me do that. I was thinking social work, but I'm just not sure. Does anyone do anything like this? What did you have to do to be able to do that? Also, what kind of place would I be able to find a job at?
one of my friends does this. but i cant remember what she studied in school =/ maybe try a sociology class
You take special ed as far as schooling goes; but now you should go and volunteer at any "home" and perhaps day-care in the city. Be prepared to pass a background check, and a check of ALL kinds. You really should do this...especially if you have never done it before. It could be very, very different from what you may be imagining...especially if you have never been in this situation. It is actually hard work; but, rewarding also. You'll need to wear comfortable, dirtiable (wd?) clothes, your big boy pants, patience and compassion. Good luck.
mentally retarded care facility, all you need is a clean record and background check.. not sure where you live. Here this job one the easiest to get. I worked in a couple. here is a story. While doing my rounds as a maintenance worker. a man with classic case of ass picker retardation boarded the elevator. He then went painting with fecal matter for 2 floors. When the door opened up, I was like HOLY SHIT. One can not help but laugh. I dared him to step toward me while I held a flashlight ready to swat him. Then I reached in and press the button to nurse station floor.. Ran down a stairway and told them dude covered in crap on his way... Then they asked me "why did I leave him on there?" and I said "you dumb bitches left him on not me."... Good times.
You don't need to major in anything really, but certain social degrees probably would help. Just a bit of a background in working with handicap people may be sufficient. I was hired on in a job like this with only my retirement home background, but they did not have anywhere to put me so the job eventually fell through, plus I am leaving soon anyway for the Air Force. But both my roommates have jobs like this without relevant college degrees, I guess it all depends on how you put yourself out there.
I was going to suggest Vallium untill I realized you were asking about what your major should be for working with the developmentally disabled. :cheers2:
