Sure the USA is far from perfect and our foreign policy is often an embaressment but to imply that these regimes don't deserve to be hacked simply because they oppose us is quite frankly ridiculous! I guess North Korea is a cool country too 'cause it doesn't like america either? Give me a break.
Oh, do you know what these regimes do on a day to day basis, then? Do you live there? I love this attitude that these governments are "repressive"... Based on what? Based on the same fucking media that lie to you constantly. And nobody had a fucking clue OR opinion on these regimes before they hit the news recently, anyway. I'm not saying they're perfect but I can't see how they're any worse than ours. In Iran and Libya their governments seem way more for the people than ours have been for decades!!
No, do you? I didn't realize that first hand experience was required to develop an informed opinion. I will admit I don't know much about Libya. When it comes to Iran however it is undeniable that their government is a hard-line theocracy. I'm sorry but that is not just media propaganda. The ayatollahs are not that much better than the shah was in my opinion. To quote the Who: Meet the new boss same as the old boss. Sure their current fundamentalist religion based brand of politics might represent the majority of people there but that doesn't mean it perpetrates true justice. History has shown time and time again that the majority is not always right or humane for that matter. If you hold the view of the minority or particularly if you speak out or demonstrate against the Iranian government you are screwed. Am I supposed to believe that Ahmadenijad's holocaust denial conference was all a media fiction as well? I really don't think its fair or accurate to equate their government to ours. At least many politicians in our country try to maintain some semblance of separation of church and state. Unfortunately the religious right like Gov. Rick Perry are another story.
I find it all a bit tryhard. I mean what ground breakingly important things have they actually achieved? Same old story, seems to be more about their own notoriety even if they are currently anonymous. Some of them will end up doing jail time and then what happens, get older, care more about money and end up working in data protection for the very organizations they were guilty of hacking. Why not the same effort put into breaking down China, Iran, Saudi Arabia's hold on freedom of information with their citizens? As for Western Government conspiracies, bureacracy, greed and individual self preservation see them always breaking down A few teens armed with bricks and bottles in Tottenham end up giving more focus to the public as to why a black guy was gunned down by police than any computer hacker could As for repressive regimes, all the poor countries are like that, all the rich ones are democratic. To fix them just let them get rich, so enough people get enough of the pie to not put up with a whole lot of shit. It is kind of that simple...in theory, infinitely hard getting them there, but once they do everything else falls into place
I have lived in Egypt, Tunisia, and (very shortly thank god) in Libya. I can't tell you what the regimes do on a day to day basis but I can tell you that it's not funny when you find out that two dozen people have disappeared overnight. Based on the fact that they are in fact military dictatorships. And everybody had an opinion about them but chose to keep it quiet. It's called politics. I advise then that you go live in Libya or Iran for six months. Or maybe Syria would be more to your liking? Good luck with that.
I think you'll find that those descriptions could also be applied to our own governments, people disappearig and all. Like I said, I'm not saying they're perfect but all anyone wants to hear is the bad side of these things (and of course the good sides of their own governments). Libya especially had some incredibly positive sounding social programmes. Why do you think Gaddafi still hasn't been overthrown? Because he has the support of his people! He must've been doing something right. A big issue for me on this is why are civilian targets being blown the fuck up by NATO weapons? And if Syria is so bad, why haven't they sent a NATO or UN peacekeeping force in to keep the peace? STILL, after MONTHS of unrest. It didn't take them long in Libya, in fact they were there before the media even reported they were. I'm not saying I'm right and everyone else is wrong but I don't believe Anonymous had sufficient intelligence to justify an attack on regimes like Syria. Then again, their main campaign is internet neutrality and Syria and Iran certainly do not have that.
facebook is going to be targeted now http://www.allfacebook.com/hacktivist-group-anonymous-declares-war-on-facebook-2011-08 https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SWQTS8zqYXU

"The internet is quaking with the news that the hacktivist collective Anonymous plans to "destroy" Facebook on November 5th. We spoke to the Anonymous member who was there at the start of "Operation Facebook," and he told us the whole thing is a misunderstanding that's spiraled crazily out of control." read this guys http://gawker.com/5829659/
lol @ comment on the bottom of that page: "They don't like Facebook because it just reminds them they don't have heads." Could be real, could be fake... OOooOOoooooh...
"There are absolutely plans to take other sites and do similarly targeted actions," the hacker said. "Any regime that's engaged in obviously heinous bullshit is fair game. Killing unarmed civilians absolutely qualifies as heinous bullshit. Not sure if it was you or someone else who linked the article its from. It's huffpo. keep in mind, they've attacked very sensitive (down to not so sensitive) us government organs, from the pentagon to redneck police departments.
