When did this start? And why? I've seen this in alternative type communities online from time to time. An old friend of mine used to say it and I thought he was just being contraire (he was a really hardcore atheist) but I noticed other people saying it in RL and was curious. Is it just to be different? If you don't believe in God why does it make a difference whether you say god or gods? I don't think you are annoying any Christians or Muslims. Unless maybe you are Wiccan or something, but then wouldn't you address an individual God/Goddess by name, as people did back when polytheism was dominant and it was replaced by just calling out the name of the "one God", God?
Sounds like it's most likely used as a way to say "I mean this in the secular sense" by alluding to times past where polytheism was the norm. May be a crack at monotheistic religions for some; maybe for others they are just separating themselves from the religious sense of the phrase. I wouldn't expect it to be antagonistic, just trying to make oneself clear. I may try to do this because I am a devout agnostic and haven't been able to scrub christian influence from my vocabulary =P
i've only seen it in the context of a character in a polytheistic culture. nobody real has ever said it to me. i have heard those silly wannabe hippy women referring to a goddess before, but i think that's just to prove that they're hippies more than anything else.
chesus christ I just remembered I heard the gods things all the time on that fracking show and when I first saw your post I was like "wtf is BSG?"
lol, My friends all gave everyone Jesus nicknames in high school. There was Jeezus Methusala, Jesus Christo (the Mexican Jesus), Jesus Crisco (the really fat Jesus), and Cheesus from what I can remember. These are the same friends that are responsible for my screenname.
