Techno( sometimes called rave) music is euphorical ecstasy music. Psytrance is associated with LSD (goa trance has a more melodic sound) Do you want me to do a Psytrance thread dreamsDOcomeTRUE ??
How deep into this topic do you wanna go? The definitions and characteristics of each have been evolving since each genre was created. One way to look at it is the styles of music that influenced each. Techno - influnced by industrial, punk, and disco to name a few. Techno came about when various aspects of those styles were fused and then tweaked. In the US it got influences from Detroit and NY, in the UK, manchester. Trance took industrial, ambient and 70's/80's electronic experimental fused different aspects of those and was influenced heavily by psychedelia from California. Techno is harder, low on vocals, heavy on voice samples while trance is heavy on melody and generally the tracks are longer. These aspects are mostly from classic Techno and Trance, that of the late 80's and 90's. In the late 90's both started to get influences from mainstream which meant the idea of the instrumental was out and full on vocals (songs) were in. Today they sound alot more similar than they originally might have to the uninitiated. To me, today's Trance is much easier to pick out whereas today's Techno, has taken on a lot of influences from hip-hop, club and mainstream radio. Trance is still very heavy on synth sounds, melody and female vocals. And the subject matter of the song is usually sappy love stuff. Any lyrics in Techno will generally be of a darker matter. Very likely, most of what you hear today and think is techno is actually trance. Over the years both styles have spun off a continuously muting list of sub genre's. I would say the last true techno song I heard on prime time radio was Day n Night by Kid cudi. This site is usually where people refer others to when trying to explain Electonic Dance music genres: http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ IMO, it's a good site but some of the info is not accurate.
This album and this song in particular, IMO, are some the best uses of samples ever. 2nd only to Public Enemy. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhfxoQwaWWU&feature=BFa&list=PL95AF9EADBA698B31&index=3
Thanks for the lesson, and I always thought trance was harder, listen to basshunter or clubradiers like special d- you is like techno, and Darude-sandstorm is like techno
So much of music is all a matter of opinion but, If this is the basshunter you're talking about: http://www.basshunter.se/ Most of his stuff doesn't sound very hard to me, sure some is quite hard but most of it sounds very bubble gummy to me. I feel pretty much the same way about clubraiders. To me, fast tempo doesn't necesarrily mean harder and anytime you bring in soprano singers, that brings the hardness down a couple notches while increasing the bubble gum factor. Special D and Sandstorm (IMO) are not techno. They're both Trance. Jeff Mills, Marco Bailey and Alex Bau are techno. To me, these guys sound a lot different than Special D and Darude.
