what are your thoughts on the new Windows OS?

the whole split-screening for multi-tasking i think is wonderful. major props for that if it works well.
and nice chic look (even though i cant imagine it looking that cool on a desktop).

its a huge change for a PC or laptop. it seems like they're following that same direction as Apple kinda is with Mac OS X Lion, and how they're integrating and merging a PC system to a tablet-like system.
we'll probably all be using tablets and those slate PCs in 4 or 5 years anyways so i find it an appropriate progressive direction, but i think some distinctions should be made. with tablets, you lose slightly some capabilities but for security in exchange; file system differences. with this Windows 8, from what i've read, it will have a file system, but with that tablet feel that gives it "less capabilities". it's either you really like it for having a tablet-like UI + an operable file system, or you hate it because those two things sacrifice overall usability.

i'm eager to hear more news eventually.

Personally, I don't really like way OS makers are trying to bridge that gap between portable and home systems. the interface is fine for a 4" screen, but I really prefer something a bit more elegant for my desktop.

Why can't I simply have my laptop? I hate touchscreens. There will always be some demand for a plain keyboard computer.

Hasn't Microsoft been biting off Apple since Windows 3.0?

I think they bite off each other. Things will never change when it comes to computers or eletronics. They bring one out and are already working on the next model or version of it. One good think I find is how cheap electronics are now. 9 years ago computers were super expensive.

They are trying to make it look the the Windows phone. Umm, why? I like Windows 7 - its the best interface they have ever made. This looks like a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.

People that always 'GOTTA HAVE' the latest OS annoy the shit out of me. I still use XP, and if Win98 had decent NT and USB drivers I'd still be on that. I force myself to install new OS on other partition to stay relevant and I resent every minute of it. I always end up setting XP as my default boot. I've been using computers long before 'windows' and the internet and ever since Windows 3 I barely use my desktops for anything, big stupid icons also annoy the shit out of me. If I'm not using firefox I'm using Windows Explorer to manage my files just like I used File manager in Windows 3 and Dos file managers before it. Detailed file view for me thanks, I never had any use for icons and big candy ass looking buttons and GUI fancy bullshit!

I hope its not like Vista where they just launch it just to get it out there and come to find out, it sucks...

I've had no problems with 7 with exceptions of the slow start-up lately...and I've had this computer for over a year now. I might just stick with 7...Microsoft scares me with their new releases...

Because the lines between how you compute when at home and how you compute on the road have become blurred and will continue in this direction to the point of being the same.

For now, laptops will look the same - clamshell design w/ a screen and keyboard. Touchscreen funcionality will be an option that you can decide to use or not.

Not when the younger generation starts designing these systems.
