1st ever? I don't think so. I'm pretty sure Ron Paul introduces bills every year or so to legalize marijuana. ;) I'm glad this one's getting press though!

The Union is an amazing movie, and proves that there is no reason for marijuana to be illegal.

Also, all the common beliefs would be wiped out if everyone watched the movie.

isn't it a bit short sighted to vote for candidates solely based on their view on drugs?

Mexican President Felipe Calderon, whose country is the main supplier of marijuana and amphetamines to the United States, warned recently that legalizing cannabis would make it tougher for countries like Mexico to prosecute farmers for growing a product that was legal in the United States.
"I would say to President Calderon that he does what he thinks is right in Mexico and I'll do what I think is right in the United States," said Frank, who said the bill would not allow the importation of the drug.

what makes me shake my head....the feds have the roots in the Constitution to regulate interstate commerce. where did they ever find the roots of 'law' to regulate what we put in our bodies? was the first try at that prohibition?

i don't give a shit what someone eats, as long as they take responsibility for being 400#. i don't g.a.s. what anyone smokes or drinks, as long as they don't drive and kill someone or try to use a weapon on me.

federal power has far overreached its base.

if one thinks in detail about issues like this, one might find that we had all this regulation jammed down our throats. i still am trying to decide whether to laugh or cry over the Amish farmer busted for selling raw milk by the feds.

They get around this by making illegal to possess the drug, as opposed to being fucked up off it - because if you posess the drug you are in violation of laws pertaining to interstate commerce. At least, that's how understand it. It's a BS trick, at least with prohibition in the '20s they bothered to make an amendment.

Sounds good to me, who is the person that we will need to talk to in our respective states to try to get our state to legalize it? I mean like Senator, congressman, governor?

The federal Congressman for your district tell them that you want them to vote to pass the bill HR 2306 Here is a link to send an email to your rep but it is better to call or write and snail mail

That would be the most effective way to fight the drug cartels and make us look a little sane or at least less hypocritical by acknowledging the reality that just about every American has partaken of weed at one time or another.

Now if it gets out there, everybody MUST write to their elected reps and let them know it's about time and you support it.

I think that we should legalize it ONLY through American farmers. Put the money back in our pockets. I think the fact that we can't even legally grow hemp (non thc) is bs too..there's an organization in North Carolina that's starting to build houses made from hemp..its' an amazing multipurpose product!!

Damn it, I live in the 118th congressional district. . .home to the CONGRESSWOMAAAAAAAN Sheila Jackson Lee. She's more worried about her triple crown weave and being on TV. She attended no 4th of July functions. She went and spent the 4th at a local swimming pool, because apparently that's more important than celebrating the birth of our nation. She wouldn't be any help to the legalization. She probably couldn't even spell Legalization, WITH spell check.

I don't think many people are calling their reps to support this bill....

It has gone to committee though to discuss weather to bring it up for a vote

The puppet masters will instruct them to vote it down if it goes to vote at all. Too much of the culture is still brainwashed by anti-cannabis propaganda that congressional phones will be silent of any constituency calls for legalization, so once again the economically amplified corporate voice is the only one heard.

If any grassroots support is given a platform it will be from selected sources to reinforce the fallacy that legalization advocates are intellectually unqualified to make life decisions and therefore should be protected from this "dangerous" drug... because it is likely that the folks who determine who gets heard are the strongest opponents to legalization.

Well, what I'd like to know is: if this bill passed, which it has almost no chance of, would it force the states to legalize marijuana? Each state has its own laws regarding marijuana possession now. Would it force the states to legalize it and then give them the power (or obligation) to regulate it?

I think it's only for federal level. Basically you won't catch a federal case over a gram anymore. The states that have medicinal marijuana legal can still catch federal cases. This would take that fed. level off I believe. I'm going to my first NORML meeting next Tuesday baby!
