So about 2 weeks ago DD (14 months, no longer nursing) broke out in a rash on her stomach that spread to her back. we gave her some benadryl and within a few hours the rash had gone. DH had let her have a piece of chocolate an caramel candy and we thought maybe she had an allergic reaction to that beings that she had never had chocolate up to this point. about a week later i noticed her face, behind her ears and the back of her neck was breaking out with the same sort of rash. she hadn't had any chocolate this time but i did write down what she had eaten that day: whole milk organic free range eggs wheat toast with organic raspberry jam annies cheddar bunnies some roast beef organic yogurt raisens mango trail mix bar the rash cleared from her neck and ears but seemed to be lingering a bit on her face. tonight the rash is back on her stomach, back anf face. DH had let her have some of the yogurt raisens again while i was gone. i had taken the milk trail mix bar and yogurt raisens out of her diet for the last 4 days until DH gave her the YR this afternoon. Could this be a sudden dairy allergy? maybe the reason the face rash was lingering is because she's had other items through out the week that have had dairy as an ingredient? the rash doesn't bother her so i don't think it's itchy??? TIA
could the trail mix have nuts in it? did the chocolate have nuts? kids can be allergic to eggs as well...
I would look at nuts first. They can often be hidden in foods that you don't think of as having them. My son developed a milk allergy after he had the prevnar immunization. Actually he developed allergies to almost everything. So yes, it is possible to develop an allergy after having something for months with no problems. But nuts is a more likely suspect. Also, as HHB said, eggs can cause a problem for some kids. How long has she been eating them? The best thing you can do is eliminate suspected foods. Then when the rash is all gone, give them back to her one at a time. Wait at least five days in between each new food. Kathi
all of the items were eliminated from her diet for 4 days, the yogurt raisens were the first thing to be brought back in and that's when the rash re-appeared which is what makes me think that it's the dairy. the rash has pretty much cleared up this afternoon, a little lingering pinkness on her cheeks but much much better. is it posible to for the issue to just be the yogurt or do you think that it'll likely include all dairy?
I would illiminate the nuts and very little milk. Just coming from my point of view i could eat peanuts when i was a child- but now i'm 26 and i went to a cell group for church and my mouth swelled up. The allergist seen me and stated i was allergic to all types of peanuts and other types of peanuts. i'm sensitive to milk as well as acidic fruits and veggies. it makes my mouth and face swell. Plz keep an eye on how the baby is doing esp with the peanuts and milk if the baby is allergic to milk try to switch over to soy. If the baby is allergic to peanuts i'd reccommend to see about a epipen- just for emergencies. i have one but i have never used it. There are babies in the daycare that attend my college and the children only last up to 2 minutes before they turn blue with peanuts. Its very very important to be aware of allergies at that certain age. T
It will most definitely include all dairy, unless theres some particular ingrdient in the yoghurt brand youre using thats causing the problem. Its lucky youve picked up on this, you can get her tested for certain allergies i think. My lactose intolerance began with rashes on my cheeks, arms and hands, and it includes all dairy especially cheese I hope you identify the problem for certain soon
I'm lactose intolerant myself, but it only started about two years ago. One of my friends has been allergic to milk products since forever. Pretty easy to deal with- either you (or in this case, your daughter) take these little lactase pills which gives you the enzymes you need or you just don't drink cow products. Most people I know are just sensitive to cow products and are okay with goat cheese and stuff, so you might want to check that out. In terms of the lactase pills, you might want to check on it with a pediatrician or something since a 14 month old would have trouble swallowing a pill.
Don't be too quick to substitute every milk item with soy, as soy is a common allergen and you can very easily develop an allergy to that as well. Actually, a rotation sort of diet is best if you have food allergies...rotating the common food allergens in the diet can help prevent the development of more allergies.
Another thing with allergies is that eating other foods with an allergy like sugar, preservatives, food coloring, and wheat can make it worse or trigger a reaction, it actually looks like there were lots of allergen likely foods in her diet and a huge amount of her diet was dairy or comprised of dairy. Luckily dairy is one of the least intense allergies and it's really easy to go without anyway, it's not anything that we actually need. I grew up lactose intolerant, then I started eating dairy again around my teenage years but only did that for a few years, when I stopped I really started feeling a lot better... and what sea of grass said about soy. The jury is out on whether or not soy is really a good food or not, but definately don't do it in excess, or substitute all that cow dairy for soy, just eliminate it as much as possible. my opinion of course.
Have you taken her to the doctor yet? Alexis had a rash like that when she was a little smaller and I had thought it was an allergy to something she had been given to eat....it would go away then come back then go away again. It ended up being excema.
I was confused about the difference between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and lactose intolerance, until I viewed this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V81uwYDa0Q It helped me (and my GP!) decide that I had a minor intolerance to lasctose, and with an appropriately adjusted diet, I've been fine since. So this short vid may be helpful to anyone like me, who wasn't sure what the heck was going on!!
