wrestling with this currently... wondering if it's a good thing or bad thing, or just human nature.

From a personal insecure/ego driven perspective, I get the feeling they don't wanna be caught making eye contact with me. I'm the type of person who makes eye contact with strangers pretty ready, and find the idea of HIDING YOUR F'N FACE after already making distant eye contact as some shady ass shit, and it doesn't make me feel good.

But I also understand most people just don't make eye contact with strangers, & when caught doing so, avoid what just happened.

What are your thoughts and self experiences on this? Should I be going crazy? Should I call people out (I have once), or should I be feeling the whole world doesn't love me? :ears:

I always look into someone's eyes when I talk to them at close quarters. If it's at a distance I'm looking at a blemish they don't know and thinking "DAMN" while they think I'm looking into their eyes.

^ you should be clarified, people who I am not in conversation with. These be usually girls ('cuz I don't bother to glance around and really look @ the guys :D), who are in the vincinity (so not the person I am currently talking to).

    * IRT to the contents of your post... I find even talking to others in close quarters + eye contact is tricky. It's an interesting dynamic...

10 years ago I worked with this guy who never made eye contact even though he was otherwise relatively normal – It was fucked u7p

He was a former cop and there was talk that he was a rat and his fellow officers in blue put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.

.. of course the gun wasn't loaded but it left a lasting impression

i think it depends greatly from person to person. working in retail/currently in a outdoor market, this happens a lot.

sometimes i think it is because somebody is shy or doesn't want to be addressed.
other times the person seems like they are embarrassed to have caught my eye and been caught watching me.

most times i just smile whenever i see someone watching me. it's the best having a pretty girl smile back at you when you know she's looking at you :D

i try to catch peoples' eye sometimes when walking down the street - at my college people used to avoid eye contact a lot, other people would smile. most people in the city just keep walking, no reaction. i think it is funny though when guys avoid eye contact with me. especially being a pretty skinny and not too intimidating.

When I walk around I do not look at people I just look through people. for example I could be looking right in your direction but be looking past you and looking at the tree behind you.

I mind my own business when out and about and do not care to much to get involved with other people and I am in my mind doing my own thing.

if I am daydreaming or something and then wake up and happen to make direct eye contact with someone unexpected then I just look away because why would I keep looking at them when I did not even mean to look at them in the first place?

people who get all paranoid or sketchy about people looking at them I think are crazy.

anytime I ride my bike somewhere or walk somewhere or go running people always look at me and sometimes even for a good amount of time and I could care less.

when I am out and about I do not care to read people. I do not pay attention that much to what others are doing. I trust my surrounding and relax and stay at peace with myself.

when I get in elavators and other time in public places maybe sometime I think that some people might feel uncomfortable around me since I do not make eye contact or acknowledge they are around but I do not know for sure and I could care less and as quick as that thought comes is as quick as that thought leaves. and if people do actually feel uncomfortable then whatever not my problem.

I just try to think nothing of other people. I try not to assume anything and I do not think I can read other people. I do see everything that is going on around me I just do not directly look at anyone. a lot of time I notice when I look at something near someone they will do that quick look at me to catch if I am staring at them and then realize I am looking at something else.

but my question to you is why keep staring at someone after making eye contact???????? why do you expect people to look into your eyes? wtf is the point of having some staring contest with a stranger? unless you wanna talk to the guy or approach the person what is the point?

sometimes i'm just looking around and right as my eyes pass over somebody they look at me, so i feel like they think i was staring/avoiding eye contact even though i was actually just passing by. then i get mad at them.

yeah exactly. some people are way to sketchy. always on guard worrying if someone is staring at them and crap. where I live a lot of times the people that have this kind of personality are people who have done lots of meth.

and kokujin I do not think it is a good idea to confront people about this. unless you like fist fights.

These make sense, but I can't help but also think in an insecure manner and wonder if it's avoidance? How do you rule that out? How can you see if this is not the case?

Hmmm. To be fair... though I may not "look around people like a pro," like you, I don't go out of my way to stare at or stare back anyone either. IRT..the person I called out was a chic and the results were pretty good actually -- started having an actual conversation and such afterwards, there was interest, etc.

I'm trying to get biitches man. :D
No but real talk, I'd rather have them casually switch to looking the other way than turn their head away so fast -- perhaps they were just embaressed to be staring but it makes me feel like they want it clear they want nothing to do with me.

Also remember *staring* (or looking, really) is treated differently in different cultures. Not everyone does it to intimidate, either...

These are the silly things....that blog my mind...

It is human nature to look at other people. For all of that we still feel embarrassment at being caught doing so. :)

I do this all the time

    I know it's because *I'm* insecure

Even when I'm the one that catches someone looking at me I quickly look away

I'm just paranoid that the person wants nothing to do with me, and like if I locked eye contact, they'd think I thought we had 'a moment'

I have no problem looking into a person's eyes if we are communicating on any other level, but if the only 'communication' is eye contact at a distance, I shy away.

I also don't want to give the impression that I am interested in them physically.

Now if that person shot me a friendly, casual smile (that didn't read 'wanna fuck?') that would dispel my insecurities and feel really good.

I get starred at quite a lot because of my bright red hair and pale ass skin, it makes me uneasy to look into people eyes, I get a little paranoid at times and think people are looking at me (and no I've never smoked meth in my entire life and don't plan on it, lol). I also hate long conversations and talking on the phone.
