I wanted to drop a few more recommendations for the OP and anyone else who happens to stumble across this thread. I shared a few instrumental/turntablism recommendations in my last post, and this time I want to share some more traditional hip-hop/rap. I have a huge collection, but can't remember everything off the top of my head, and all I have available to me at the moment is a portable harddrive. I'm just going to list a few of my favorites from what I have available to me at the moment. These groups/artists cover a wide range of styles and eras of hip-hop and rap, ranging from the 1980s to 2000s, and from the eccentric "Space Hip-hop" of Ras G to modern day hip-hop with an emphasis on moral and political lyrics, such as Saul Williams. Please let me know if you would like more recommendations. Again, I have a massive collection, and don't mind throwing out more, but these should give you a broad overview. You can't listen to this new shit... you have to bring it back first, The 90's man this is where rap music was actual music... Listen to some 8ball n mjg, lord infamous, koopsta knicca, triple six mafia... I can go on and on.. but dont judge music by a bunch of clowns from atlanta. Gucci mane is good tho... idc what the ppl think of that, but he can spit and got a nice flow
Here are my favorites... Ready to Die - Biggie Smalls 2Pacalypse Now - 2Pac The Chronic - Dr. Dre 2001 - Dr. Dre Doggystyle - Snoop Doggy Dogg Try any of the classics from the 90's really it was a good decade for rap; there are so many good 90's albums it won't be hard to find a good one to start with. You might find that some of the music will sound dated, I notice it when I listen to some of 2Pacs stuff. But regardless, keep it in the 90s because most rap has sucked for like 10 years now imo. It just keeps getting worse imo. Em's ok, but his stuff is so depressing lol. Kanye and "Diddy" are too narcissistic for me. And I don't know where to begin with this Lil Wayne guy. 50 and G-Unit are boring, they just recycle the same shit. Dre's probably smokin' so much chronic and workin' out (fuck have you seen him? he's jacked now) that he's forgot about detox. The Game is alright, about the only one I don't mind these days. But yeah, start off in the 90's.
Bone thugs-n-harmony are pioneers in the game. No one is counting them in this? If someone is new to rap suggest the original Bone thugs. I don't know if anyone here knows, but Bone Thugs-N-Harmony have sold more records than the beatles! One thing that got me first hooked on Bone was they didn't have a chores in every song. Sometimes they will use one between members, sometimes only at the beginning, sometimes not at all. Its not verse chores, verse chores, ect ect ect. Almost all of my favorite songs by them don't use a chores. Rare quality in rap hip/hop. Not to mention 4 of the 5 members with solo work involving all kinds of well known guests. Each member has his own feel both together and on their his solo work. Krayzie bone and Bizzy though have produced solo work that is equal to 2pac. No body has a flow like those two with the extremely smart, and creative murderous lyrics. After you listen to them long enough, you learn a lot of positive, and strong advice for what to do in life if a problem is thrown your way. Their first album is still and always will be a classic. No group has accomplished what bone has. There lyrical ability is top notch and should never be forgotten. East 1999 [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xTgCUSRG0k Down 71 the getaway, which is my personal favorite on the album even though it only has three members. All three of them destroy this track. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GveiyWndOkg Mo Murda [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXZEgpv_GLQ There second album Art Of War in my opinion is their best work. Style is perfected, and their lyrics are fresh. They also collaborated with 2pac and made one of the most well known rap songs ever. If someone says they know rap or hip/hop and don't know that song .... they full of it. Handle the vibe [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ql2elOTtmeg Thug Luv featuring none other than 2pac. This song is so good because you can really feel the anger from everyone. One of, if not, the darkest beat by bone. Bizzy has best verse imo. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z9nXD8HjIA Let the Law end [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtbtZ2xdxyY Friends. This is my favorite song on the 2nd disc. Anyone can relate to this song. Beat is so good, how to changes for each member, and all 5 spit excellent verses. I have had many people listen to this song who can't stand rap, but they walk away enjoying this one. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORrfc9stzfU The third album BTNHResurrection was very "mainstream" sounding. Don't get me wrong their are a lot of good songs. Battlezone. Man bizzy comes at you with some speed on this one, krayzies verse is a damn book lol. Check it. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTLYe6uiaQo&feature=related Lets Change the World. Amazing song, very positive look at how each of us needs to help one another, to change the world, for the better. A more well known and popular song by them [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojX6Kas3Btw They worked with biggie, this a very popular song. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5_Gj_BbhTI Their solo work is so good as well. My favorite by Layzie and Bizzy. They have produced over 5 albums together and this song is in top 3 from them. Not only do both of them just rip the track apart, it is one of my favorite beats/chores they have ever done. Song bumps hard too. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Znm6IYQyA Krayzie bone is a magician on the mike. Listen to his whole Thug Mentality album. Its almost 40 songs of professional top stuff. Murda Mo, my favorite single by him. Everything about this song is perfect. The beat and krayzies vocal tone is perfect harmony, while he still comes at you with fast, too smooth lyrics. Its so good. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag3dykUq3HI Thats that bone. Wish kills it opening up this song. Krayzie last sentence in the first verse is excellent. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQnpZ2plL6Y Talk to Myself. This song has helped me through hard times more than a few times. Very positive song for going through hard times and keeping your head up. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osCmA8uUGjU Bizzy is on a whole other level. Just as good though, never doubt this man. He is one smart person. Mercy Mary, newer stuff, takes lots of listening. =] [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oltKoVThh2I Demons Surround Me. Nobody has vocals like this. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csupCE89coE Lots more out there i didn't name. Albums from all five members plus solos. Ask me if you need more bone thug suggestions. They have hundreds of songs. Did i forget to mention the 5 niggas won a grammy?
Some good recommendations here but I always go back to this [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjLHrhLVwzs
