Ooh neat a place to introduce myself! I'm Beccah, 30, currently in Michigan but looking to move somewhere even better. I've been dreading for 5 months now and I'm finally starting to look okay. Patience is a virtue and I realize that my dreads only grow with time. I just wish they didn't hold on to the memories so tightly!!!!!
Hey. My name is Christine aka cricketine and started my locks three weeks ago. Had them crocheted but am letting them do their own thing. They are getting soft and fluffy/squishy finally and I love them. I should have done them when I was 18 instead of 38, but who cares. Wish I could post pictures from my phone, will have to wait till I get back on my computer
Hi Christine, And Welcome To Our Humble Little Dreadlock Forum.... Forget About Age My Dear, Dreads Are Ageless And Timeless,*just like me* And I'm Speaking From Experience, I Won't Put My Age Up Here, But Trust Me, Compared To Me, Anyone 38 Is Still In Nappies.... Cheers Glen.
Thanks for the welcome Glen Age is an odd thing, I may be close to 40 but I still feel like I'm 20. That is if the weather cooperates!
I mean this in the best possible way, but it's nice to see some *older* people with dreads, especially women! You just got some major cool points from me! Keep it up
Hello, I'm 23, from Jamaica. This is my second set of dreads. Will post pics of both sets. I am now on Day 2 of the 2nd set after 3 days of backcombing and crocheting. I now plan to leave them the hell alone to mature. I'm excited to see them form and become awesome dreads. Wish I could have neglected my hair till that point but there are several reasons why I can't (excuse my crappy cam) 1st set 2nd and last attempt
welcome, gotha! I'd be interested in hearing about your experience with locks in Jamaica. I hear that people with locks are discriminated against even more there, than they are where I live (U.S.)
I will tell you all I know. Dreadlocks here sprouted in Rastafarianism. And most know what the Bible says about hair, no comb, no razor etc. Rastas/Dreads here are seen as dirty. There is also some stigma attached to dreads of them smelling bad. Why? Because true Rastas here, live in the bush, bathe with baking soda and water and don't smell so great. We have different types of Rastas or Dreads in Jamaica. We have Bobo (pronouced bu-bu not boo-boo) Dreads which are the true freeform, matts of hair, like a rug, they don;t touch their hair at all. It forms sometimes into one huge dreadlock. It's a religion, way of life... The we have the maintained dreads, like mine, and then we have sisterlocks... those tiny micro whtvrs. Now, the stigma attached to dreadlocks in Jamaica is pretty harsh because when ppl here think of locks they think of Bobo Dreads. Very rarely u see ppl with dreads in high paying jobs. Rastas are seen as outsiders, maintained dreads are not so bad. They are even called 'dutty ras' translated 'dirty rasta' I have never seen a Rasta man in a job. Maybe a cart vendor, or in a herbal store... but I doubt he could work in a bank or business place like that. My friends with dreads are musicians or work in a factory or warehouse. I have one bobo dread friend, who is an artist (painter), lives in the bush, and his dreads are to his knees. In Jamaica, if your dreads are neat and well maintained you have a better chance of getting a job. Persons with sisterlocks have no problems. There are many ppl with manicured dreads here who still experience weird stares and names but its not so bad. However, the community of ppl with dreads is great. If you walk pass a rasta man with dreads and you got dreads he will call you queen or sister All in all, ppl in Ja are very judgmental towards ppl with dreads. I think its because Ja is mainly a Christian country and ppl with dreads are assumed to be Rastafarians and thus do not worship their god. But then again, Jamaica is a very judgmental place. Hope this answers ur question. I think I got much in, feel free to ask anything more.
GLEN Is Proud To Admit, He Is The Oldest Dready On Here, And Quite Posssibly The Oldest Dready That Has EVER Been On Here... Cheers Glen.
well my dreads are young. but so far, my friends are in love with them. My father hates them :S... I havent had much experience elsewhere. But i did go out last night and some random guy told me he liked em. It's ok to have dreads i guess in a nightlife kind of way. But to get a job. no way. and out in public... bound to get some stares. that and the fact i have odd piercings.... the stares may not be just my hair. will update as time passes.
