Any ideas on where I should start. I'm really into the ideas and the whole hippie thing but I'm just getting into and I need some help. Any suggestions? Peace
Go camping for a month, and not in an RV or something, go camping deep in the woods or mountains for a month. Bring some friends, some guitars, some weed (or what have you) and maybe listen to some good 60's albums. You'll learn what it's all about after that - not only about being hippie, but a lot of life's lessons.
Read up on our history and culture. Start with Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Tests. Theres also a book titled Hippies A-Z. Check out Terrence McKenna, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsburg, William S. Burroughs, Ken Kesey, Jack Keroauc etc Learning and understanding our history will help you understand and appreciate the present. Check out some Grateful Dead Allman Bros. or some other good jam bands. Listen to the studio recordings then listen to the live recordings.... Go check out some festivals.. see www.jambase.com
Yeah I've read the book "light my fire" by ray manzarek a few times and he lists a whole bunch of books that people read back than such as "on the road" by jack Kerouac and books like "a coney island of the mind" and books like that. I don't really know where to find books like that other then barnes and nobles but I'm most likely going to get them off the interenet. And I do listen to bands from back in the day like Jefferson airplane and c,s, and n and the doors and stuff so I already have parts like that covered lol
Don't worry about being a good "hippy". Be true to yourself. Sift through all the information that comes at you. Be respectful of all life and treat others as you would like to be treated. You will become who you are. Hippy is just a word. It really doesn't mean anything.
Being a good hippie. Hmmm. Well, let's try ten ways, eh? 1. Fuck labels. 2. Fuck your neighbor (just make sure she's of legal age and that it's consentual) 3. Fuck society. 4. Love the Earth and help keep Her Clean. 5. Fuck Labels. 6. Be honest. 7. Fuck society. 8. Be carefree. 9. Live and let live. 10. Fuck labels.
Trying to be a "Good Hippie" is a very Zen concept. In the wise words of Yoda "Don't try, do." Or as Shakespeare said "To thine self be true." Stay Brown, Rev J
C,S,and N started out as C,S,N and Young. Get yourself the first 5 or 6 Neil Young LPs and don't forget the Teach Your Children LP by the four of them. And not to be rude or anything but the word is Hippie. Unless you're talking about a Hippopotamus:2thumbsup:.
You mean you haven't read the Hippie Rulebook? There will be a test. Let your freak flag fly-- turn it into a parade. It will help you be seen as a hippie by others if you have the external trappings of hippiedom (the clothes, the drugs, the music) but that's not the point. The point is getting over your fear and learning to be your own genuine self. Picking up some hippie stuff that resonates with you is cool-- I do it, as evidenced by my wardrobe and my stash. But I also happen to really like S&M and air-conditioning. To be a good hippie you've gotta be a good you, and nobody can tell you how to do that.
