So, recently I've become very interested in road bikes and bike racing. I'm going to buy a road bike soon and would like to join a race maybe later on down the road. Any advice for me from any of you expert bikers?

Bike on roads with little to no traffic. I refuse to bike on a road where cars pass me more than once per minute, scares the shit out of me. So many clueless drivers out their...

Get a flashing light for behind your seat.

Camel packs work well unless its over 90 degrees, because in my experience once the temps get higher the water starts to get warm fast, then tastes like rubber. Though they do work well nonetheless, just fill it with ice cubes.

Bike shoes that click down are awesome just remember in busy streets that you have to un-click, lol.

Would you recommend in investing in the whole bike tight suite or can I just bike in basketball shorts and a t shirt?

When i bike i'm in basketball or normal shorts. The people who wear those spandex take it waaaaay more seriously than i do. I like riding a bike but not dressing like im on the tour de france if ya know what i mean.

they have more casual looking bike shorts that do help for any longer rides.

thats what i used when I did my cross country bike trip, no way was I going to be in spandex.

I'd save on the racing apparel until you are sure you want to be a racer. and i'd test out different bikes to see how they ride and get it fitted for you, so definitely go to a reputable bike shop for this.

Wisconsin was fun to bike through

I'm no expert but mountain biking is where it's at :2thumbsup:

You can bike virtually anywhere and when the road gets too narrow you can always bike on the narrow grassy shoulder or on the sidewalk.

Nothing lame about this exercise. Its a different type of speed, but its for a junkie none the less.

As a seasoned bicyclist in urban setting ... fast starts and stops with lights make for strong legs and stamina. See if you can beat traffic off the mark and stay with it until the next light. Repeat ... also work with a group taking turns at the front, rounding back and through the group as if you are a member of a la tour team - the close proximity is excellent preparation for racing. Get a bike that fits you and is light weight - mine Specialized Cro-Mo clipless pedals

I'm actually surprised as to how many replies this got. I am a speed junkie. I always just love going real fast. There aren't many road bicyclists on my side of town for me to join them. I'd have to start off solo and maybe, hopefully run into some of them.

I love mountain biking. It is a lot more exciting than road biking. just make sure you slime your tires because you will get flats from thorns going off road.

Seal the rim holes with the yellow tape, install the rubber valve strip, mount your tire and add sealant...then apply air and hit the trails.

The puncture-resistant layer built into the tread and the 180-threads-per-inch construction gives a buttery-smooth ride to your road bike.
