Going Vegan?

    :daisy:I've been a vegetarian for 4 years now and I want to cut animal by products out of my diet now. Do any of you have any good tips or favourite vegan recipies to share? I'm making the transition on Monday.

    Get some dry beans, whole grain like short grain brown rice or millet. Soak the baens for 8 hours and then rinse them and cover them with water again plus an inch or 2 and cook them in a pot with a lid on low until they're soft(2-4 hours). Put 1 quart of water in another pot with a lid and add 1.5 cups of rice or millet. Put it on medium until all the water is bolied out. In a separate pot with a lid put about 2-3inches of water. Get it boiling and add veggies like zuchini, onions, cabbage or whatever and put some spices like a pinch of basil and parsley and a cut up clove of garlic and simmer until vegs are tender. When they are add some of the cooked beans. Serve it side by side with the grain. Add salt to taste or tamari sauce and a T of olive oil. You can vary this recipe with different beans and other whole grains like quinoi, buckwheat groats, and other veggies.

    Duuuude I wish I could go without meat. My ex is a vegetarian, and got me to watch some of the peta type videos a little while back. I've felt like it's wrong for years and years and I'm pretty sure in the not so distant future it'll be considered unimaginably barbaric, but it's so difficult to look the way I want to look without getting plenty of protein from animal sources. I could probably due without the taste if that was the only issue involved. I'm just gonna do my best to stick to eggs and seafood and be very careful with how I cast my vote at the supermarket.

    Props to all of you who don't contribute to all the negative shit that goes along with raising and killing animals! Ah well, soon enough we'll probably be growing the actual meat instead of killing the animals anyhow.

    Congratulations on choosing to become vegan! :2thumbsup:

    The best way to go about it is to learn to cook. I'm not the greatest cook in the world (luckily, my wife is), but even in my bachelor days, I didn't rely on prepackaged food. Sometimes the packaged vegan stuff can make a nice treat, but it gets really expensive and you don't really know what goes into it. Better to learn what to do with real veggies.

    There are about a bazillion vegan cookbooks out there, and lots of vegan blogs with recipes. I can recommend any cookbook by Jo Stepaniak or Bryanna Grogan.

    i have been a debating the same concept, i have been practicing vegetarianism for little over 2 years now and have lately decided to make the switch the veganism. one item I found hard to part with was crepes, yes i like crepes...anyways I love crapes but find it difficult to find them without egg or dairy milk....this is a great tasty recipe

    1 cup flour
    4 tablespoons corn starch
    1 cup plus about 2 tablespoons nondairy milk (I use soy)
    1/4 teaspoon salt, optional
    1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
    vegan buttery spread, for cooking (I use Earth Balance)

    1. In a bowl, use a hand mixer to blend together all of the ingredients, except buttery spread until completely smooth. Alternatively, put all ingredients except buttery spread into a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth.

    2. In a nonstick pan over medium heat, melt enough buttery spread to cover the bottom of the pan. After spread has melted, pour about 1/4 cup of crepe batter into the pan and use a spatula to spread it into a thin layer that covers the entire pan. Work quickly to make sure that the batter doesn't get cooked into a thicker pancake before you can spread it.

    3. Cook for about 1 1/2 minutes or until the crepe begins to curl up a little at the edges. Use a spatula to flip the crepe and cook the other side for about 30 seconds more.

    4. Remove crepe from pan and fill with your filling of choice (banana slices with vegan chocolate chips, fruit preserves with soy cream cheese, and simply melted buttery spread and powdered sugar). Repeat until all crepe batter is used up and enjoy

    My mom is a vegetarian but not me. I tried one week not to eat meat but I can't manage to do so. I guess its already part of my system to eat meat once in a while. I love veggies but not everyday i guess. But thanks shockcell for this wonderful recipe. I should try this at home...

    I'll probably stay vegetarian. I find alot of vegan ideals to be extreme. Like not wearing seashells...they wash up on the beach...

    Hey, since veganism isn't connected to any kind of law you could still eat vegan but collect some seashells at the beach.
    I totally can't understand why people dump the whole idea just because of some "rules" they dont wanna share...

    Hello. How about, when the subject comes up, saying something plain and simple like I don't eat meat or dairy products. It's what I do. :) This way you're avoiding labels entirely and may wear your seashells by the seashore and other places green and blue too. ahhm anyway, here is for thinking about the matter: :2thumbsup:

    Seriously though, don't get too hooked up on external labels and boundaries unless you're just looking for a badge to wear. DO what you are comfortable doing, whether others class that as vegan or veggie or whatever doesn't matter.

    a couple of practical tips.
    1) as mentioned earlier in the thread, learn to cook. It's not that hard and can be fun.. even the inevitable disasters (tablespoons are most definitely NOT teaspoons)
    2) Grab a book like 'How it all Vegan'. Great food, loads of variety, simple to make
    3) In the UK we have a small pocket sized book called The Animal Free Shopper. Lists what is vegan. Not just food, but booze, toiletries etc. Invaluable.
    4) Accept that you'll be living in a meringue free world. *sigh*

    This to me sounds like an excuse you are giving yourself. I believe you may want to think more about your reasons for why you want to live in a more ethical manner and not allow for yourself to get hung-up on the seashell politics of others.
