I recently bought 'Astral Travel' by Richard Webster, and I'm almost done with it, though I haven't tried any of the exercises yet. I bought it out of curiosity. It basically says that through astral travel you can go backward and forward in time... explore any place in the world... speak with people from other eras and cultures, etc. "For many people, the most important aspect of astral travel is that it proves the spirit can survive without the physical body, which means that death is not the end." Although incredibly intriguing, is it really possible? It kinda sounds too good to be true. Does anyone have any experience with this?
I think if it was real it'd be government officials and scientists who'd be using it with the intention of serious study and exploration rather than new age types who hang out in the paranormal section of the library claiming it as a hobby.
I thought that we all astral travelled while sleeping. It's just a matter of remembering. You could work on remembering maybe? Suggestions before sleeping? Just a thought.
I can't astral travel/project consciously, but very occasionally i have a dream, which upon remembering tells me i was off exploring someplace else whilst my body was asleep. My best example of this: There was a Slovakian girl where i worked and we were friendly enough but i didn't know her very well. One night i dreamed i was in Slovakia in a small town in the mountains ... i was sitting in what i understood to be her mothers kitchen, around the table, talking to her mother who spoke no English so it was hard communicating verbally, and also her brother who did speak English, had dark wild hair with grey streaks in it, and we were talking about guitars. I was served eggs with some strange sauce on which i didn't like and politely ate. The kitchen door opened onto the street and there was a coffee bar right opposite and a stall selling cold meats and sausage just up the road ... and a few other things. Now after waking from this dream i was excited because i knew i could ask this girl to confirm or deny everything about my dream ... and so i asked her... and wierded her out a bit. And so she confirmed to me that everything in my dream was correct. So yeah, sure i think astral travel/projection is real enough. And as far as 'leaving your body' is concerned, ... well, the world is also your body, the universe is also your body ... so you're not 'really' going anywhere. You're just looking, feeling, exploring what's there.
I would say give the.exercises a try and make up your own mind. I have had some interesting experiences with OBEs I. the past. jedite83

... thats kinda what it feels like. I can never ever in a dream remember being aware i'd left my body asleep somewhere. Many people who have NDEs, while looking upon their body from above become aware they still have a body. The physical body is such a mystery, and statistically a miracle, but also in dreams are you sometimes aware you are everything in the dream? And the awareness in which the dream happens? I'm not too often aware of having a form as such...sometimes, but just my identity as 'me' or 'I', and participating in and witnessing or getting involved in, the dream. Yet my dream is my dream but dreamers can share a dream from what i've heard and i believe very often our own dream experience IS part of a shared dream experience of communicating with our world in a mutch more energetic, emotional often, boundless and uninhibited way without the normal boundarys our waking mind dictates. Again it's such a miracle my mind boggles. Dreams throw up truly remarkable things for me to astound at. I should pop in more, i forgot hip forums existed for a while, as i do sometimes ... just distracted by moving about alot staying with different people without a permanent home ... for over two years now. Vicious circle of no job no place to live, no place to live, no job. My Dad died over a year ago and left me some cash so i just bought a small flat (apartment) in a little old town near the moor not too far away from family and friends, .... just recently so i'll be moving there soon I couldn't afford to buy anything here where i grew up in Totnes, It's become a pricey area. Dads death was expected ... he'd had prostate cancer for a while which spread all over and i stayed with him a short while before he died. I'm over it now. Hows things Windy and Zen hows things for you?
My best friend as a child began astral traveling when she was literally a child (about 10 yrs old), although neither of us had that vocabulary back then. It began because of an abusive childhood (not sexual...her mother was an undiagnosed schizophrenic, imo) which sort of "encouraged" her ability to literally leave her body in the house, appearing to hear (along with 3 other sibs and the wimpy daddy) the rants and occasionally endure "appropriate punishment", while the essense of her, her spirit would go elsewhere. THIS is what I consider astral travel...and just for example She could accurately describe what a person was doing and wearing and/or putting on (even though she had not physically seen them) and, if the person was talking. She would accurately describe whatever AFTER she re-entered her body. There was always a period of time, she was like catatonic; but not long. This happened many, many times...we were teenagers...we experimented. She also would do this with her 1st terribly abusive husband, I later found out. (which is another kettle of worms; but suffice it to say, his reign of terror ended. ) She no longer does this; although I think she still could. She always described it as "swimming out of her body". I think it is like a muscle that if you don't flex it, it doesn't disappear; but, it is harder to use it.
First off, I am sorry about your Dads passing. Losing a parent is a hard one. Hope your life is settling down somewhat. Glad you found a place to put down some roots. We have all missed you on psychic forum. You always have something wise to contribute. :sunny: There was only one time that, beginning to astral travel, (this was in a dream) I experienced leaving my body. It was through my abdomen. I did it again and again until I gained some control over it, as I left my body at a tremendous rate of speed. Like you, I ended up somewhere that could be confirmed. I also believe that you can share dreams. And I am glad to hear someone feels the same. I have experienced this with someone quite a few times. I know this person in waking life, but there are other dreams I have had about people that had such a different "feel" to them, that I thought it was more than a dream and the people were real. You know? not a nonsense dream, but something with spiritual overtones. My friend and I tried to consciously dream together but were unsuccessful. Since she has always been a natural lucid dreamer since childhood, I thought we would be able to do it, but no go.
Oh yeah Windy, it'll be nice to have somewhere to really make home at last. Launceston (where i'm moving) is a small town just over the devon border into cornwall. It's an old norman town (that's very old) nestled in stunning countryside. It has a ruined norman castle and some of the old town walls and arches remain. I've already met someone who lives there on facebook and he says he knows my neighbours so thats a good start. It'll certainly be a new era in my life. Yes, there's the hardcore type astral projection Lynn talks of. I've only read about it and the landscape seems very close to our waking world. In a good account i read the author describes not being able to communicate with the physical identity/personality ... the 'person' would be unaware of his presence, yet this person has an astral self, an astral counterpart which IS aware of his presence and communicates freely. I remember a guy called 'Stalk' here on hip forums who was pretty good at some kind of projection, and he was pretty good at teaching it ...he had quite a following, but that seemed to be something like projecting through the top of your head into more of a dream-like experience where you can be anyone and do anything and be the master of the dream so to speak.
Launceston??? You are moving to Launceston??? Daphne Du Maurier! Jamaica Inn! ...hmmm "In Search of Stalk"... ...found him...banned...lol...
I think I have read this book about 3x in the past 20 yrs. Launceston, Bodmin Moor...I loved the wildness of it. I believe Jamaica Inn still stands today on the road to Launceston. (sorry about hijacking thread...could not help myself) :2thumbsup:
I think it's possible to astral project, so many reports of it. Though I am skeptical if your "soul" is leaving your body. One idea is you are simply self inducing an epileptic seizure. Another you are just tapping into your subconscious and exploring it. I've read up on it a lot, and tried it out these are the two ideas I think make the most sense.
God, this sounds delightful. There's a mostly intact Norman keep near Dover - built by William the Conquerer himself - that my first wife and I toured on our visit to the UK years ago. About 900 years old. Having something like that in your backyard would evoke some interesting thoughts. It seems like the perfect place for you, liquid. I've never done it either. However I would have to say that based on lots of other people's experiences in which they astrally visited places never seen before and verified the locations later, it would make some sense to leave open the possibility that some actual "travel" occurs - of something that carries some sort of awareness - as opposed to mere neurophysiological oddities.
