We both thought it was a cheese dip when he offered it to me, saying how yummy it was. I didn't think anything of it, and he's so used to meat that he didn't taste the tuna. I did. The look or horror on his face when I told him what he'd just given me was EPIC, poor man! Yeah, I kind of tossed my cookies a bit later, but he didn't do it from malice so whatever. It was funny! The university caterers really need to label these things.
At least he was aware that vegetarians don't eat fish. I hate the following reply I always get when people hear I'm vegetarian. "So you only eat fish and chicken right?". The other one I get a lot is (from those that understand veg*anism a little) "So what can you eat? Sounds boring"
Kudos for having good humor about it. Might be a good idea to write to the head of the catering or the dean. Types of vegetarians
I'm a Pescatarian. I don't think is a type of "vegetarian", I don't care what the wise people at about.com say. I don't even call myself that. I just say I don't eat meat, but I don't eat fish and that I used to be a vegetarian. It used to bother me when people called themselves vegetarians and said I eat chicken and fish.
There are two accepted definitions of vegetarian: one is a diet consisting only of vegetables, another is a diet consisting of mostly vegetables. The American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary's definition is actually: Consisting primarily or wholly of vegetables and vegetable products.
I don't think that justifies eating fish or meat and still call yourself a vegetarian. I think it means your diet might be mostly vegetables, but dairy is also a part of your diet.
GUys, we are veering off AA's topic, which was a personal story. Years ago I wrote a FAQ in here. I laid out definitions for the purposes of this particular forum. here is the relevant bit: Distinctions in the veggie world: The most common tags to describe various vegetarian diets are: lacto-ovo (consumes milk and eggs), Lacto- (milk, no eggs), Ovo- (eggs, no milk), vegan (no animal or insect byproducts, usually including honey). Sub divisions include but are not limited to: fruitarian (only eats regenerative parts of a plant: seeds, fruit, some harvested leaves) raw vegan (food is never heated above 160 F) People pursuing the veggie diet who still eat fish, poultry or any other flesh are still omnivores. We support your journey, but we might not teach you the secret handshake. Peas, lovage and understanding, drumminmama forum moderator So, in that spirit I endeavor to welcome those who are at the considering stage. But they still don't get the secret handshake. Or decoder ring.
At a family gathering, I had said "I don't eat meat". I was told which things I could eat that didn't have meat in them. I ate this one appetizer... and it tasted like fish. I mentioned it to my aunt and she had this smirk on her face... and said fish isn't meat. Or something. What was done was done.
Patterns from gastronomy, religious prohibitions (ie not meat on Friday becoming fish on Friday) and zoological definitions leak into every aspect of eating. Some people can't wrap their heads around broth as meat. All we can do is be clear about our needs/ preferences and let goofs made in ignorance slide. Malice is another matter.
