So, I just had a thought occur to me and this may just be completely unrealistic, but I wanted to get some opinions from you guys... I've been thinking about getting my own place and all...really looking forward to having my own but not looking forward to signing a lease and all. But I just now got this crazy idea. What if I saved up the money and got a camper? Granted, it would be a tiny living area and all..but it makes sense.. I love traveling so not only would it allow me to do that without worrying about hotels, but it means no rent to worry about... I dunno...just a thought. What says you guys? Decent idea if processed enough or not realistic?
I think it's a great idea, even if you don't necessarily travel. Just living on some campgrounds in a camper is pretty awesome and you meet lots of interesting people that way. I've lived in a few campers in my time and it was usually pretty cool, aside from the fact that we had seven people living in a camper one time. lol That was a little crowded. Still pretty cool though.
gas prices are gonna suck this summer...but it sounds like a good idea if you have enough cheap/free places to park I imagine the sewage/bathroom would be the largest hurdle if youre used to indoor plumbing type living...and of course the climate of the area youre in ..I know living in a camper up here during winter is crazy but it can be done I been thinking about this same idea lately..getting a camper as a place away from everyone for the summer..change of pace change of venue
Just be sure to save up some of the cash you save to keep the vehicle running. I've lived in a car, and ended up in a shit situation where my vehicles broke, all my shits in it, and certain people want me out of the parking lot. Had to push that car a little under a mile. Thankfully some people helped along the way.
awesome! I'm glad there's people on here I can learn from then. What I've been worried about is anchoring down on a campground for weeks at a time. I don't ALWAYS travel, but it would definitely open doors for me and essentially help me save money and do more. Only thing about that is, I don't know the policies on campgrounds or if there's any that wouldnt care about you staying there for a long period of time. That and just leaving my camper there while I go to work...Not sure how I feel about that, really. D-n't want someone to take off with my home. lol.
another thing ive thought about. I was just gonna get one that attaches cause I don't need anything huge, but that would also mean detaching it and all. Again, not sure about the whole leaving my little camper there open for whoever to take so long as they have the right equipment.
you can buy good tongue locks and wheel boots (like the parking people use) to make the crooks move on to the easier to steal trailers they can still break in easy though
There are lots of people doing a "Tiny House" living situation now. Do a google search for tinyhouses...tumbleweed housed. Lots of plans available and lots of homes being built. Some tiny homes are built a trailer frame, Trailer like you would use to haul equiptement on. Think of a horse trailer size platform with a little house built on it. You can move 'em around to avoid zoning laws, restictions. Move from one friends back yard to another. Live in tiny house communities... It could be a fun thing.
My in-laws live in their camper and travel around the country with their daughter/grandchildren. It works out really well since its just the 2 of them and they find campgrounds where they can work and get cheaper rent. They love it! I suggest doing it if you know your way around a camper mechanically (somewhat, at least, like cleaning out the poop and whatnot) and otherwise and that you like the smaller space
I've spent way too much time living out of a camper while working to ever see the appeal of doing it for fun.
It's not unrealistic at all. I've known a couple of guys who lived in campers. One of them was a bum and all he owned was a busted truck and that camper. I used to hang out there all the time. I bought him iodized salt to cure a boil on his ass and forehead. Camper living will give you boils. lol Then after we realized he was a psychopath, we stopped hanging out with him and eventually he moved his camper somewhere. A few years later, our friend's house burned down, so he decided to try to repair it himself and he bought a big camper and lived in his garage. That damn thing was way nicer than my house.
Bunnie, I think it's a great idea. However, as many posters have stated, there are many things to consider. First, a slide-in Camper will only fit on a full-size pickup..(Ford F150-350, full size Chevy, Dodge Ram etc.)...your looking at a 10-12 mile per gallon (max). At close to $4.00 per gallon, you'll be broke in 2 weeks. Maybe consider a VW bus....doesnt have to be a camper...or even a small size pickup with a "camper" cap....Ford Ranger, Chevy S-10, Dodge Dakota etc...not quite the same, but much cheaper to maintain. Again, with a pickup, do you plan on being anywhere cold in the winter months?..if so, you'd want to have 4 wheel-drive......Front wheel drive vans or a converted mini-van might work better... Not trying to ruin your party here, just throwing out some things to think about... On a side not, I "lived" out of my "capped" pick up truck 2 summers ago for almost 4 weeks....travelled to a bunch of festivals...it worked out great..but that was only short-term and in the summer...I'm sure the winter would have been a different story
We had a family who lived in an old bus. They even had a woodstove in the bus and they traveled all over the area. Unfortunately, the woodstove got the best of the bus
