Is it the ‘right’ to say whatever you want and not have those views criticised in any way? On a number of occasion people here have taken that stance and have become affronted and annoyed when their statements have been criticised. To me people here have the freedom to say what they want (within the guidelines) but others have the freedom to judge and reply to any statement. That to me is the foundation of debate – to see if ideas can stand up to scrutiny. Just because someone hold a particular set of views does not necessarily mean those views are rational, reasonable or correct. If they hold those views in silence then that is their right but as soon as they express those views or try to promote them then I believe it is not only other peoples right but their duty to point out and explain why the views are (in their opinion) irrational, unreasonable or incorrect. To me if an idea cannot be defended from the charge that it is irrational, unreasonable or incorrect, then it isn’t a worthwhile idea. Now people still have the right to hold such an idea and even express it but it doesn’t give them the right to go unchallenged.
If it is according to 'guidelines' or laws, then speech is not free. Yes, everyone SHOULD have the right to speak their opinion and everyone else should have the right to speak thiers in return. However... both in conventional society and other places... those in power decide that THEY know better then WE, what our opinions should be and disallow any type of dis-agreement with their opinion. Free speech, doesn't exist, only free to support power speech is allowed.
There you go then. Free speech is being allowed to say what you want. But don't forget- so does everyone else...
onion rings are for assholes? We appearantly have two completely different ideas regarding the best way to use an onion ring.... I've had the same definition of free speech since I was in elementary school and my teachers first started inundating me with pro-American propaganda...this was one of the few things I was told that didn't end up being useless propaganda, actually. free speech is the ability to criticize one's government without fear.
free speech is your right to a critical discussion - a discussion void of both social desirability bias, and the use of hard power or forcefulness to gain conviction.
It is a kind of speech which evolves from the freedom for doing something. It is without discrimination.
The SCOTUS has ruled that MONEY is free speech, and corporations are people. Corporations have speeched a billion dollars in this election. How much have you speeched?

Miko Peled is a peace activist who dares to say in public what others still choose to deny. Born in Jerusalem in 1961 into a well known Zionist family, his grandfather, Dr. Avraham Katsnelson was a Zionist leader and signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. His Father, Matti Peled, was a young officer in the war of 1948 and a general in the war of 1967 when Israel conquered the West Bank, Gaza, Golan Heights and Sinai. Miko's unlikely opinions reflect his father's legacy. General Peled was a war hero turned peacemaker. Miko grew up in Jerusalem, a multi-ethnic city, but had to leave Israel before he made his first Palestinian friend, the result of his participation in a dialogue group in California. He was 39. On September 4, 1997 the beloved Smadar, 13, the daughter of Miko's sister Nurit and her husband Rami Elhanan was killed in a suicide attack. Peled insists that Israel/Palestine is one state—the separation wall notwithstanding, massive investment in infrastructure, towns and highways that bisect and connect settlements on the West Bank, have destroyed the possibility for a viable Palestinian state. The result, Peled says is that Israelis and Palestinians are governed by the same government but live under different sets of laws. At the heart of Peled's conclusion lies the realization that Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace as equals in their shared homeland.
I think this site would let you post that somewhere else - but probably frowns on posting the same kind of think in unrelated threads (derailing). Have you nothing interesting to say about 'free speech'? Or is that your point? free/frē/ Adjective: Not under the control or in the power of another; able to act or be done as one wishes.
