Where can I camp free in the southeast?

I've been hitching down the coast from NY. I'm currently in the outer banks. I did his largely to go camping in cool places without cash, but usually end up sleeping in small patches of trees by the road or in shelters.

If someone could offer suggestions, it'd sure make my trip more fun.

Any national forest i believe. I live in GA and have camped all through the National Forests here as well as in NC. If you are feeling like a quest, you can hike as much of the Appalachian Trail as you want and camp for free virtually the entire way.
