Not the way anyone would have thought though. Close to ten years on, OBL now dead in a rather anti-climatic fashion Revolution in Lybia, Egypt, Tunisia and other parts of the arab world Al-Qaeda didnt really get them anywhere, not that they exactly existed or more accurately were unified in the first place The US economy seems to be in the toilet - which was more to do with world food shortages than anything to do with the War on Terror. And somehow China seems to have gotten the best deal out of the last decade, for sitting back on concentrating on trade while everyone else fucks around with nonsense. Canada still remains the most boring nation on the planet Bahgdad will probably end up the new Dubai, Afghanistan, well how else you going to make money out of that place except growing drugs. Turned out to be a fizzler in the end. And going by this decade - earthquakes, volcanos, 100 tornadoes in one go, tsunamis, next decade it looks like it will be the War on Mother Nature - or WoM(a)N
I think the most significant change that happened once 9/11 went down is it woke up a lot of American people to our government corruption. It was the first serious event that flooded in internet as well. The mainstream media was not telling us anything at the time, like they still do to this day. The internet was filled with videos that made a lot of us think, something else is at hand. Why were we not told about building 7? Why on this day did it fall like a perfect setup demolition? I don't believe China wants the US in economic problems since we fund so much of the country. Canada wont ever do anything globally. Canada is the small kid with glasses who is good at math that hides in the corner during recess. The earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanos and tsunamis are part of the earth cycle. I don't think any country in the world has had a influence on such events. I don't think we will ever have control of such. We don't know what the next decade will bring but one thing is for sure is tornadoes and earthquakes will be there. Always.
I felt it gave the right wingers a firm foot hold in the security industry. If you can create fear and danger then you can create a thriving business from it and everyone profits from tax payer money.
I think 9/11 pretty much fucked the US. Wouldn't've with any other President, though. It started a spree of wars, a complete attack on American freedom and helped FoxNews mobilize the poor & stupid into a conservative/corporate army.
I agree. It makes me feel depressed, numb, and disillusioned to think that after 9/11, America had a perfect opportunity to reach for greatness, and instead....well, we got the last 10 years. I view Canada more as the country that has enough sense to keep to themselves. The past ten years has also illuminated Canada as the country that Americans can keep in the back of their mind as a future home when America completely fucks itself. Americans are to Canada as Mexicans are to America. We're gonna come for your jobs, you damn Canucks! I think more than anything the past decade, in America at least, has illustrated that capitalism is not infallible. What we're witnessing now is the extreme side of capitalism. Capitalism works when its kept small and local, but this globalized, corporate-controlled economy is only going to fail in the long run.
I think we COULD find balance again, but it's going to take some regulation, and what hope do we have of another trustbuster making his(or her) way in during this climate? The only hope we have is for people to get politically active and I just don't see it when Charlie Sheen's hookers are making headlines.
In terms of the economy, the power is with the people. The wealthiest 1% might run the corporations, but the rest of the broke ass 99%control the spending. If people stopped putting their money into huge corporations and put it back into their local economy, the corporations would fail and local economies would prevail. Same concept though....as long as people can stare at racks of magazines featuring Charlie Sheen's latest exploit while waiting to buy food that was shipped from 2000 miles away, its just not going to happen.
I've had this exact thought before. If people learned democracy through spending on a large scale, we'd be set, and the people would have more power than ever before. I really think it has potential, I just don't know how quickly it could happen. Buying American-Made and the popularity of that growing is a great first step though. Fight Club's ending is truly beautiful, ain't it? =P (the movie)
