or made the hair stick up on the back of your neck. I feel like a scary book right now for some reason. King can't be the only good author that has some such books. Although you can let me know what ones of his scared you. Still others must be out there. It would be nice if the book was not the size of a tomb too btw.
If you want a truly weird book go with 'Maldoror'; written in 1868, it's said to have inspired many artists in the surrealist movement (including Dali himself)! Be warned however, it's a challenging read.
The Shining is the one that sticks out in my mind...I remember not wanting to get out of bed to turn the light out after finishing it.
when i was little, Goosebumps. bahaha my mom tells me when she read Amityville Horror as a kid, she was terrified to even go on the bus
I actually thought this book sucked and I'm not a Dean Koontz fan, but his book The Taking really creeped me the fuck out. My roommate had it so I picked it up and started reading it one night and I was so scared that I couldn't turn off the light so I just kept reading. The end is what makes the entire book suck ass. You spend the whole book being creeped out, wondering what the hell is happening, what is going on, and then you get to the end and realize its very religious, thematically. I thought the end was a cop out, as well. However, if you can excuse the ending, the rest of the book is really scary.
Crime and Punishment is probably the only book that profoundly disturbed me, and for an extended period of time at that. Although there have been sections of other books that sort of left me unsettled, such as a certain suicide scene in Anna Karenina. The entire premise of The Idiot was kind of difficult to accept also.
American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis scared me in a really good way; it made me realize ways in which I am too disconnected from other people, and just how bad that really is. (Note: not a horror story, a satire of materialism about a psycho killer-businessman) I Am Legend by Richard Mathesson was just horrifying.
If you just want a short story, "the fear of darkness" was lots of fun, but the end was too drawn out and explained all the things that you did NOT want to know, it messed up the wonderfully set up intro. I probably have the PDF somewhere if you can't find it. There's also a website based on it that I liked, which is actually how I first found it. *edit* here's "ted's caving page"
I too read the story, and if you think The Fear of Darkness is the original, you might want to read this: http://grahamjw.wordpress.com/2009/09/17/ted-the-caver-mystery/
Scars and other Distinguishing Marks by none other that Richard Matheson was the first book I ever read that stuck with me in the way of creeping me out. I grew up reading H. P. Lovecraft, so it was hard for me to be scared, but this collection of stories is memorable.
House of Leaves. Not so much "scary" as it is disturbing and mind fucking. It's sort of an avant-garde book too, I highly recommend it. Also I'll second Ted's Caving Page. If you like that then look up Dioniae House. I'm pretty sure I spelled that wrong but it's like a webpage horror thing and it kicks ass.
Burning Water, Jinx high, and Children of the Night all horror novels by Mercedes Lackey. I found them to be REALLY creepy. The kind of thing you don't wanna read all alone in the middle of the night without being surround by protection amulets! peace Delfynasa
I just gotta say, I didn't realize there was a book about, or vice versa about this Awful and Disturbing movie, which I found myself watching 3 times just to figure out was this effed up dude really doing this...or did he not? Please tell me. thanks. :mickey:
