Every year at my kids schools they send home a paper stating that the school is having a week of no TV. Every night for a week, students are to write down whatever activities they do together with their families that doesn't involve a TV, gameboy, computer, or video games. Sometimes my kids try to think of activities that nobody else in class will do like jigsaw puzzles, macrame, origami, helping Dad fix the car, making a scrapbook, chopping firewood, and baking bread with grandma.
Some families have 2-4 televisions in their home and they have no idea how to relate to their own family but could go into detail about the lives of the characters on their favorite TV show.
Has anyone here ever gone without TV for a week? If you haven't try it for a weekend...ya might be surprised on what ya learn about yourself & your family.
I have lived in places where you couldn't get television without paying for cable and I refused to pay for it. Good thing 7 kids can entertain themselves.

    Not even the daily show?

Sorry, I'm addicted to electrons and cathode ray tubes, I can't participate in such a thing.

I think it's a great idea for the kids, it's time they went outside. I've gone without tv, sure... that's what family camping trips were for, after all. But ya I'd miss tv... I like to have it on in the background. (music doesn't do the same thing as tv) But it's especially good that the school is saying no to video games/computer games. I think that's a lot worse than the tv... tv at least you can't take places with you. I can't count how many times my 11 year old cousin has come to a "family bbq" or something and spent the whole time playing his damn hand-held video thingy. ZERO social skills.

I could easily do without the television. I think the "no television for a week" is an awesome thing to do!

We don't have cable here either, and we don't feel one bit deprived, plus, it saves money! :)

    Hugs.

My family has participated in no t.v. week when I was in school...I used to get a lot of crocheting, latch hooking, and coloring done. :D

My mom and I did a lot of activities together...but my step-dad was never that into paying attention to children.

seeing as I have the house to myself right now I haven't turned it on at all. I still see it at work and I watched 2 VCR movies with my kids yesterday (at their house)

I've gone without TV for a long time now...the only thing that used to interest me were sitcoms like "Seinfeld", but that era is over and all those fake reality shows are just...ick.

I think it's a great idea for kids to break away from all that new age technology and just enjoy the simpler things in life. :)

I have a few shows I like to watch, but I could easily do without tv for a week or longer. My daughter and I have a day or two a month where there's no tv, computers, video games, etc. all day. We usually end up doing something crafty or cleaning out closets and deciding what to donate. They end up being good days no matter what we do. And yeah, the whole reality tv thing is just... blechy.

I don't own a TV and the only thing I actually miss about it is the news. Other than that, I can survive without a TV just fine.

I've just got "back" from two or so weeks of no television. It's amazing what a difference it makes -- I started dreaming again, writing songs, and reading more often. TV sucks, but if it's there, I'll watch it. I'm working on watching less, and fantasizing about quitting cold turkey :)

I get most of my news from the internet...once in awhile someone at the nursing home has TV on and I'll catch a few minutes of it then.

I would rather space out in front of the computer then TV
