_Anyone saw this? This movie is not for everyone, mainly because of the way it was shot. Personally I found it innovating & creative. It's one of those 'i adored it' or 'i hated it' movies. The movie itself lacks scenarios and special effects which, in my opinion, enhaces the amazing preformace given by the cast & the original screenplay.
A couple of months ago, I made a blind purchase of this film. I had already seen most of Lars Von Trier's films, my favorites being Dancer in the Dark and Breaking the Waves. So, I popped this baby in and sat through it for almost three hours. I found it rather interesting. Innovative, yes, but in a way, the "set" turned me off. (For anyone who doesn't know, a large stage was used as a town with no walls, practically no furniture, and the names of the rooms and streets written on the stage.) I later watched it again and liked it much better that time. No one makes films like Lars Von Trier! The story was excellent but I wish he had made in on real sets. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was very well-done; I just think I would've been more engagged in the story if it was shot with sets. I'm looking forward to the next to films in the trilogy (Dogville was the first.) Has anyone else seen it? Peace
I think I understand what Von Trier was trying to do. I think he was trying to accentuate the social interaction of the characters without the distracting facade of our material lives. In other words, naked interaction. Unfortunately for me, its very uniqueness became a major distraction. But, if this is the genius who brought us 'Breaking the Waves', then any problems I see in this film must be my own.
I know this thread is a bit old, but I just watched this movie "Dogville" and I wanted to discuss. I want to start by saying it was one of the weirdest, most depressing films I've seen. The set and the way it was shot was very cool, I thought. It was raw social interaction. I was very surprised by the ending and didn't know how to feel after it. I was thinking about the dog and how people can be dogs, but was it saying you should kill everyone who's mean to you? All in all, it was interesting, kind of confusing, powerful, depressing, artistic, and the acting was quite good. It was neat to see Nicole Kidman in a role like this, being a weird movie that never hit the main stream. These are my random thoughts right now, I hope other people have seen this film, tell me what you thought! peace, Sam
